Linde announced plans to double the capacity of its carbon dioxide (CO2) production facility in Freeport, Texas, with the addition of a second CO2 liquefaction plant. Scheduled to begin operations in 2027, the expansion will help meet rising demand for high-purity CO2 across a range of essential applications.
The new liquefaction plant will process crude CO2 captured from MEGlobal America Inc.’s ethylene glycol production site in Oyster Creek, Texas. Linde currently supplies oxygen to MEGlobal from its air separation unit located in Freeport. By capturing and liquefying CO2 that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere, the facility contributes to more sustainable industrial operations.
The expanded complex will serve a wide array of industries that rely on consistent, high-quality CO2 supplies. These include beverage carbonation, food preservation, dry ice manufacturing, low-carbon fuel production, and various chemical synthesis applications. All of these uses require stringent safety and quality standards, which Linde is committed to maintaining.
The Freeport CO2 complex is also notable for its environmental credentials. It is the first CO2 liquefaction facility in the United States to earn ISCC PLUS certification from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification system. This third-party validation underscores Linde’s efforts to promote circular carbon practices by capturing and repurposing CO2 emissions.
“This expansion highlights Linde’s commitment to supporting industrial growth along the Gulf Coast,” said Amer Akhras, vice president of Linde’s South Region. “Our investment strengthens our CO2 network and ensures a reliable supply for customers while positioning Linde for continued growth in a rapidly evolving market.”
Linde’s growing infrastructure in the Gulf Coast region is part of a broader strategy to provide low-carbon and sustainable solutions to its industrial customer base. As decarbonization efforts accelerate across sectors, the ability to supply CO2 responsibly and reliably will play an increasingly important role in energy transition pathways.
The company’s existing and planned investments are designed not only to support current customer needs but also to create a scalable platform for future demand, including in emerging low-emission technologies and clean fuel production.
With the addition of the second plant, Linde reinforces its role as a leading provider of industrial gases and CO2 solutions, combining technological innovation with a strong focus on environmental stewardship.
Linde is a leading global industrial gases and engineering company, reporting sales of $33 billion in 2024. The company fulfills its mission of making the world more productive every day by delivering high-quality solutions, technologies, and services that drive customer success while supporting sustainability, decarbonization, and environmental protection.
