The collaboration will focus on market study, raw material sourcing, pre-marketing activities, and investment opportunities to support sustainable packaging solutions.
In a major step towards advancing India’s circular economy, LNJ GreenPET, a division of the LNJ Bhilwara Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with Sumitomo Corporation of Japan. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen India’s recycled polyethylene terephthalate (r-PET) sector by leveraging global expertise and local market knowledge.
The MoU outlines several areas of collaboration including commercial development, raw material procurement, marketing strategies, and investment opportunities for LNJ GreenPET’s upcoming r-PET project. As part of the agreement, the companies will conduct a joint market study that will assess India’s r-PET landscape through detailed market sizing, customer segmentation, technical evaluations, supply chain benchmarking, and regulatory feasibility analysis.
This market study will play a crucial role in shaping LNJ GreenPET’s strategy as it prepares to begin commercial production by 2026. With growing emphasis on sustainable packaging and rising demand for recycled materials, the insights gained will help identify opportunities and overcome challenges in building a robust r-PET ecosystem in India.
Sumitomo will bring its global network to the table by assisting in sourcing r-PET flakes from Southeast Asia and other regions worldwide to support the project’s pre-production phase. Beyond raw material procurement, the partnership will extend into pre-marketing activities, customer engagement, and setting up domestic and international sales channels. This dual-market focus is expected to position LNJ GreenPET as a key player in both Indian and global sustainable packaging supply chains.
Commenting on the partnership, Riju Jhunjhunwala, Chairman of LNJ Bhilwara Group, said, “This MoU with Sumitomo Corporation is a significant step towards strengthening India’s circular economy ecosystem. By combining Sumitomo Corporation’s global expertise with our vision for sustainable plastic recycling, we aim to create a robust r-PET value chain that addresses both domestic and global demand for sustainable packaging solutions.”
Echoing this sentiment, Yutaka Takamura, General Manager of Sumitomo’s Green Chemical SBU unit, stated, “It’s an honour to partner with LNJ GreenPET in advancing the r-PET sector in India. This collaboration allows us to combine our global experience with LNJ GreenPET’s local expertise to support the development of a strong circular economy. Together, we aim to create innovative, sustainable solutions that address both domestic needs and global demand.”
The partnership reflects broader sustainability objectives in India, where policymakers and businesses alike are focusing on reducing plastic waste and promoting advanced recycling technologies.
