Metro Mining increased April 2026 bauxite output 33% despite cyclone disruptions, maintaining shipment guidance and strengthening global aluminum supply confidence.

Metro Mining, an independent Australian bauxite producer, significantly boosted its bauxite output by 33% year-on-year in April 2026, mining 563,000 wet metric tonnes (WMT) at its Bauxite Hills Mine in North Queensland. This strong performance was achieved despite operational disruptions caused by Tropical Cyclone Narelle and maintenance-related limitations on shipping capacity.

The primary cause for the increased output was Metro Mining's strategic focus on building stockpiles. This proactive measure was taken in anticipation of enhanced shipping throughput following the return to service of its offshore floating terminal, Ikamba. The Ikamba, crucial for the company's transhipping operations, resumed full service on May 3, 2026, after undergoing a drydock maintenance program.

Despite the impressive mining output, shipments for April totaled 416,000 WMT, representing a modest 2% decrease compared to the previous year. This slight decline in shipments was a direct consequence of operating under single-transhipper conditions during Ikamba's drydock period, compounded by a brief, unplanned breakdown of the sole operational floating crane barge, which resulted in three days of lost loading. To mitigate these challenges, Metro Mining chartered three geared ultramax vessels to supplement its transhipping capacity.

The company's ability to increase production amidst adverse weather and maintenance issues highlights its operational resilience and commitment to its expansion strategy, which aims to double capacity from 3.5 million tonnes to 7 million tonnes. Metro Mining has reaffirmed its calendar year 2026 shipment guidance of 6.6 to 7.1 million WMT, signaling confidence in meeting its annual export targets and reassuring investors and customers about operational continuity.

From an industry-specific perspective, the consistent output and reaffirmed guidance from Metro Mining are significant for the bauxite market. Bauxite is a critical ore for aluminum production, a metal experiencing high growth due to the energy transition. Metro Mining's operations at the Bauxite Hills Mine on the Weipa bauxite plateau are crucial for supplying high-alumina bauxite directly to international customers, primarily in the Chinese market. The company also plays a vital role in supporting regional economic activity and Indigenous employment in Far North Queensland through agreements with Traditional Owners. This operational update underscores Metro Mining's robust position in the global bauxite supply chain, even as broader aluminum prices have seen some fluctuations.
