Metso Bolsters Sustainable Mining with Acquisition of TL Solution's Recycling Operations

This move underscores Metso's commitment to advancing circular practices within the global mining industry.

In a significant stride towards a more sustainable future for the mining sector, Metso Corporation announced on July 4, 2025, its agreement to acquire the recycling operations and induction heating technology development capabilities of TL Solution, a privately owned Finnish company based in Oulu. This acquisition is poised to fortify Metso’s pioneering efforts in mill liner recycling, a critical area for reducing environmental impact in mining operations.

The collaboration between Metso and TL Solution is not new; the companies have previously worked together to develop the very recycling technology that Metso introduced to the market in 2022 – the Poly-Met™ mill liner recycling services utilizing induction heating. This innovative service marked Metso as the first company to offer such a solution, demonstrating its long-standing dedication to sustainable practices, with mill lining recycling development having commenced over a decade ago.

The integration of TL Solution's technology and operations directly into Metso's portfolio will grant the company complete control over the development and implementation of mill liner recycling solutions. This, according to Karlsson, will ensure consistently high-quality, scalable services tailored to the unique needs of each customer. Metso's ownership of this advanced technology, combined with its extensive know-how and expertise, is expected to deliver exceptional service and support to its clientele. The recycling service, facilitated by the separation line, is currently available to mill lining service contract customers.

The environmental benefits of this enhanced recycling service are substantial. It directly addresses a significant sustainability challenge in the mining industry: the disposal of worn mill liners. By providing a robust solution for these materials, Metso aims to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills and significantly cut CO2 emissions, thereby improving environmental efficiency and actively supporting the industry’s crucial shift towards circular economy practices.

The innovative technology behind the service enables the safe and efficient separation of various rubber and metal liner components, including cast inserts, wear plates, and backing plates. This comprehensive solution can process all composite liners, such as Megaliner™ and Poly-Met™ liners, as well as standard rubber mill liners. Furthermore, Metso already has an established process for recycling metallic mill liners, ensuring that metal components from its equipment can be recovered and re-processed for manufacturing new products, further bolstering circularity in mining operations.

Martin Karlsson, Senior Vice President of Metso’s Mill Lining business line, emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition. "Metso started mill lining recycling development already more than 10 years ago. The acquired technology will strengthen our recycling technology development capabilities based on induction heating. The technology is a first-of-its-kind service, and we are proud to take the next step in this journey," Karlsson stated.
