Metso Secures €40 Million Order for Sweden’s Viscaria Copper Mine

Metso has signed an agreement with Gruvaktiebolaget Viscaria to supply a comprehensive package of mineral processing equipment for the Viscaria copper mine in Kiruna, Sweden. The contract represents a significant milestone for the project as Viscaria moves into its execution phase and advances plans to establish one of Europe’s important new copper operations.

The agreement is valued at approximately EUR 40 million and has been recorded in Metso’s Minerals segment under third-quarter 2026 orders received. Viscaria is targeting annual production of around 120,000 tonnes of copper concentrate. Once operational, the mine is expected to become Sweden’s second-largest copper producer and strengthen the country’s position in the European copper supply chain.

According to Viscaria COO Charlotte Odenberger, consolidating the delivery of the project’s major process equipment under a single contract will support detailed engineering and procurement while improving execution predictability. The agreement is also expected to help the company secure critical equipment and maintain progress as the mine development moves toward construction and commissioning.

Metso President for Europe and Central Asia Renaud Lapointe said the Viscaria project is among Europe’s significant mining developments. Metso’s involvement began during the early stages of the project, and the latest agreement expands its role across the processing plant. The company highlighted its ability to provide integrated processing technologies throughout the development and operational lifecycle of mining projects.

Under the contract, Metso will supply technologies covering multiple stages of the copper and iron ore processing flowsheet. The package includes a Metso FIT crushing station equipped with Nordberg C Series jaw crushers and Nordberg HP Series cone crushers. The flotation section will feature TankCell and Concorde Cell technologies designed to support mineral recovery.

The equipment package also includes magnetic separators, thickening systems, slurry pumps, MHC hydrocyclone clusters and process analyzers. For concentrate and mineral filtration, Metso will provide Larox PF and VPA filters. Process engineering services are also included in the agreement.

The latest order builds on an earlier contract awarded to Metso for Select SAG and ball mills, announced in January 2026. Most equipment destined for the processing plant will be supplied through Metso’s Plus offering.

The Viscaria development comes as Europe seeks to strengthen domestic supplies of critical raw materials and reduce reliance on imported metals. Increased copper production from the mine could support regional demand from electrification, renewable energy, power infrastructure and other industrial applications. For Metso, the project further strengthens its position as a supplier of integrated mineral processing solutions.

Chemical Commodity Price Impact

The news is positive for copper because the Viscaria project has progressed toward execution and targets annual production of 120,000 tonnes of copper concentrate. Greater future European copper supply could improve regional availability and potentially moderate import dependence, although actual supply impact will emerge only after the mine becomes operational. Higher copper concentrate production could also support downstream smelting and refining activity. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the immediate price impact is likely limited, as the project is still under development. However, future demand for sulfuric acid, flotation chemicals, grinding aids and other mining chemicals could increase, providing modest upward demand support.
