Mexico [North America]: Litio para-Mexico, Mexico's government-run Lithium mining corporation, is actively researching techniques to extract Lithium from geothermal resources, according to CEO Pablo Taddei. This announcement was made at the 2030 California-Mexico Summit that took place in Mexico City.
LitioMx is a newly formed state-run entity, established in 2022 through a decree from the Mexican Government. The primary objective, as stated by President Andres Manuel Lopez, is to safeguard Mexico's Lithium resources within the control of the government. Although several foreign corporations have contracts in place for exploring Lithium deposits in Mexico, the President has confirmed that these contracts are under review.
Taddei brought attention to the Lithium potential in the Cerro Prieto geothermal power plant located in Baja California, which is operated by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). Although Taddei has not revealed any specific numbers or details, he expressed that the exploration process has been "very ambitious" and there is a substantial increase in information on Lithium resources and reserves.
It has been a decade since a collaboration between Canadian and Mexican entities was formed in 2009 to investigate Lithium extraction from geothermal resources in Mexico. As such, the upcoming enterprise marks a significant new effort to pursue this unique avenue for Lithium mining.
