MLC, a leading provider of lime solutions and a portfolio company of HBM Holdings, today marked a significant milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony at its Bonne Terre, Missouri, facility. The event celebrated the commencement of a comprehensive refurbishment project, highlighted by the upcoming installation of a state-of-the-art, sustainable kiln slated for commissioning in 2026.
The Bonne Terre site, acquired by MLC in 2022 from Valley Minerals, plays a crucial role in the production of dolomitic lime (calcium hydroxide CaOH2). This essential material is a vital component in the manufacturing processes of both steel and glass. Located in Southeast Missouri, the operation is ideally positioned to serve the burgeoning demand from domestic metal and glass manufacturers, particularly with the anticipated launch of new steel plants in the Southeastern and Midwestern regions of the United States in the coming years.
Paul Hogan, President and CEO of MLC, emphasized the significance of this project, stating, "This project represents our commitment to excellence in lime manufacturing. It marks one of the most significant capital investments in our history and generates value across our stakeholder groups — improving quality for our customers, sustainability for our communities, and a safer, more enjoyable workplace for our team members."
The centerpiece of the refurbishment is the installation of a new vertical-shaft kiln. This advanced technology is projected to significantly enhance production efficiency while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions per ton of lime manufactured. This aligns with MLC's broader strategic vision of becoming a leading global provider of lime solutions with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility.
Beyond the new kiln, the investment encompasses a range of crucial upgrades across the Bonne Terre facility. These improvements include the implementation of cutting-edge safety equipment to ensure the well-being of all employees. Furthermore, the project includes the construction of a new rail connection, which will streamline logistics and improve transportation efficiency. Employees will also benefit from a newly constructed office building, a modern quality control laboratory, and enhanced break and locker areas, all designed to create a more comfortable and productive work environment.
"This project is a milestone for our strategic vision: to be the leading global provider of lime solutions with an unwavering commitment to safety, sustainability, and service," Hogan affirmed. "We are investing capital across all our sites in pursuit of that vision, reinforcing our position as industry leaders in responsible lime manufacturing."
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key leaders from both MLC and its parent company, HBM Holdings.
