MODEC Inc. and Carbon Clean Solutions Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly accelerate the development and deployment of offshore post-combustion carbon capture technology. This collaboration follows the announcement of their floating production storage and offloading (FPSO)-based carbon capture pilot plant project.

The MOU outlines a framework for continued cooperation to fast-track the integration of Carbon Clean’s On-Board Carbon Capture Solution (OCCS) on MODEC's FPSO vessels. By leveraging MODEC’s established FPSO design expertise and Carbon Clean’s proprietary Rotating Packed Bed (RPB) CycloneCC technology, the companies aim to develop a scalable system that can handle the typical emission profile of a MODEC FPSO.

If successful, this initiative will pave the way for carbon capture capabilities to become a standard feature in MODEC’s future FPSO projects. This aligns with broader efforts to support decarbonization in the offshore oil and gas industry and contribute to global climate goals.

Koichi Matsumiya, chief technical officer at MODEC, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership: “Building on the early success of our pilot plant project, we are committing to accelerate this work with Carbon Clean. As a technology integrator and offshore solutions provider, we must stay true to our core values and diligently explore ways to contribute to a more sustainable society.”

Aniruddha Sharma, chair and CEO of Carbon Clean, noted the significance of the agreement: “MODEC is at the forefront of the next generation of FPSO development, and we are proud to support this progress with our innovative carbon capture technology. This agreement marks a significant step toward the commercialization of onboard carbon capture for FPSOs and sets a powerful precedent for the broader maritime industry. As the International Maritime Organization’s emissions regulations continue to evolve, our CycloneCC technology offers a scalable and effective solution to meet these targets by the end of the decade.”

The partnership between MODEC and Carbon Clean underscores a shared commitment to reducing carbon emissions through innovative technology. Integrating carbon capture into FPSO operations will not only provide clients with more sustainable options for field development but also reinforce FPSOs’ role in ensuring a reliable energy supply during the energy transition.

MODEC’s midterm business plan prioritizes emission reduction and sustainable innovation. Through this initiative, the company aims to support clients’ decarbonization objectives, enhance its environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance, and maintain long-term market competitiveness.

Carbon Clean is at the forefront of transforming carbon capture technologies for hard-to-abate sectors such as cement, steel, refineries, and energy-from-waste operations. With more than 15 years of expertise in designing, constructing, and operating industrial carbon capture systems, the company has established a global presence with 50 technology references worldwide.
