Nippon Shokubai’s U.S. operations achieve ISCC PLUS certification, enabling global net-zero supply of acrylic acid and superabsorbent polymers.

Nippon Shokubai’s group companies in the United States have successfully acquired ISCC PLUS certification for the production of acrylic acid (AA) and superabsorbent polymers (SAP). This certification marks a significant milestone in the company’s global sustainability strategy, as it enables the supply of AA and SAP products that are regarded as having a net-zero carbon footprint. The achievement aligns with the group’s broader efforts to contribute to a circular economy and reduce environmental impact across the supply chain.

Acrylic acid is a crucial industrial chemical used widely in the manufacture of paints, adhesives, coatings, and sealants. It also serves as an essential raw material in the production of SAP, which is commonly used in hygiene products such as disposable diapers, sanitary napkins, and incontinence pads. As one of the global leaders in the supply of both AA and SAP, Nippon Shokubai has been prioritizing sustainability and decarbonization in its production processes.

Since 2021, the Nippon Shokubai Group has been actively working to obtain ISCC PLUS certification for its manufacturing sites around the world, including those in Belgium, Japan, and Indonesia. With the recent certification of its U.S. facilities, the group has now established a comprehensive, four-region global production and supply network for ISCC PLUS-certified AA and SAP. This global system is supported by the use of biomass-derived raw materials and follows the mass balance approach—a method that enables traceability and controlled allocation of sustainable content within manufacturing processes.

The ISCC PLUS certification is an internationally recognized sustainability standard that promotes responsible sourcing of renewable feedstocks. Products certified under this system assure customers of their reduced environmental impact, particularly in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and resource conservation. Nippon Shokubai’s certified products are thus poised to meet the growing global demand for environmentally friendly materials across various industries.

By offering ISCC PLUS-certified AA and SAP, Nippon Shokubai not only enhances its product portfolio but also provides added value to customers seeking sustainable alternatives. The group sees this achievement as a meaningful step toward reaching its long-term goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. It is a part of the company’s broader transformation strategy outlined in its long-term vision and mid-term management plan, which focus on innovation, environmental responsibility, and enhanced stakeholder engagement.

Moving forward, Nippon Shokubai intends to expand its efforts in sustainable manufacturing and continue developing low-carbon solutions that align with global sustainability targets. The certification of its U.S. operations represents a significant leap toward building a more resilient and eco-conscious supply chain on a global scale.
