Northern Graphite Corporation has been selected by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to represent Canada in a strategic battery materials evaluation program with Japan’s Lithium-ion Battery Technology and Evaluation Center (LIBTEC). The initiative marks an important step in Northern Graphite’s efforts to qualify its battery anode materials (BAM) for international customers and expand its position in the global battery supply chain.
The program includes CAD 155,800 in funding support and will allow Northern Graphite to test its BAM under LIBTEC’s standardized, customer-relevant evaluation protocols. LIBTEC is an independent third-party organization recognized for battery testing and evaluation, providing Northern with an opportunity to generate independent performance data that can support commercial discussions with battery manufacturers.
Northern Graphite is the only battery anode material developer selected for the Canadian initiative. Its participation complements Canadian cathode material developers involved in the broader program and highlights the country’s expanding capabilities across the battery materials value chain.
Under the initiative, Northern will supply BAM samples made from graphite produced at its Lac des Iles mine in Quebec. The graphite will be processed through the company’s battery materials technology platform before undergoing independent testing at LIBTEC facilities in Japan. The materials will be benchmarked against established industry reference products under standardized conditions relevant to battery manufacturers and automotive original equipment manufacturers.
The evaluation will examine critical battery performance characteristics, including capacity, fast-charging capability, cycle life and material consistency. The resulting third-party data could help Northern optimize its products, strengthen customer qualification programs and demonstrate the commercial readiness of its BAM portfolio.
The partnership also provides Northern with greater exposure to Japan’s advanced battery ecosystem, which includes major battery producers and automotive companies. This could create opportunities for future customer engagement, qualification agreements and commercial supply relationships.
The initiative reflects broader efforts by Canada and Japan to develop secure, resilient and sustainable critical-mineral supply chains while reducing reliance on China for battery materials and processing. For Northern, participation supports its strategy of developing an integrated mine-to-battery supply chain serving markets across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
As global lithium-ion battery demand rises, independent qualification through a respected Japanese testing platform could improve market confidence in Northern’s products. The program therefore represents a significant milestone in the company’s downstream strategy and may strengthen its prospects of becoming a diversified supplier of battery anode materials to global markets. It may also improve credibility with prospective international customers.
Product and Chemical Commodity Price Impact
The move is positive for Northern Graphite’s battery anode material portfolio because independent LIBTEC testing can validate performance, accelerate customer qualification and improve credibility with battery and automotive manufacturers. Successful results could support supply agreements and strengthen demand for Northern’s anode materials. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the price impact is likely limited because the program is still at the evaluation stage and does not immediately add supply or demand. However, successful commercialization could increase demand for battery-grade graphite and related processing chemicals, potentially providing modest upward price support for graphite and battery-material inputs as non-China supply chains expand.
