OCI begins supplying semiconductor-grade pitch to local graphite producer, aiming to expand in high-value materials for advanced technology industries.

OCI has officially launched the supply of high-value semiconductor material, pitch, marking a strategic move into a vital segment of the advanced materials industry. On July 21, OCI announced it had begun initial deliveries of pitch for the production of isotropic artificial graphite to IBIDEN Graphite Korea — the only domestic manufacturer of this specialized material in South Korea. This initiative is part of OCI’s broader strategy to penetrate and lead in the high-performance materials market critical for semiconductor manufacturing and other advanced applications.

Isotropic artificial graphite is a sophisticated material characterized by its high thermal resistance, purity, and outstanding electrical conductivity. Its ability to maintain structural and electrical stability even under extremely high temperatures makes it indispensable in the semiconductor sector. Specifically, it is widely used in the manufacturing of semiconductor wafers, where it serves as a container for melting polysilicon into ingots and as a heater during the wafer deposition process. Additionally, it has various applications as a mold material in high-temperature casting and molding of critical components across multiple industries.

With this supply agreement, OCI has taken a significant step in localizing the production of pitch used in isotropic artificial graphite, a material that has so far been entirely reliant on imports. This development not only enhances South Korea’s self-sufficiency in strategic materials but also opens new avenues for OCI in the global semiconductor and high-tech manufacturing supply chain.

Historically, the pitch produced by OCI has been primarily used as a binding agent for electrodes in aluminum smelting. However, the scope of its applications has recently broadened to include industries such as semiconductors, defense, and even nuclear energy. The increasing versatility and importance of pitch reflect its rising demand in high-performance sectors.

The global market for isotropic artificial graphite is valued at approximately USD 3 billion (around 4.2 trillion Korean won). To address this growing demand, OCI intends to optimize its current production facilities, enabling a flexible and scalable increase in pitch output. This adaptability positions OCI to respond swiftly to market recovery trends and the surging demand in the semiconductor sector.

OCI’s Vice Chairman, Kim Yoo-shin, emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the semiconductor materials market. “Our supply partnership with IBIDEN Graphite Korea is just the beginning,” Kim stated. “We aim to broaden our pitch applications into diverse advanced technology sectors, including defense and small modular nuclear reactors.” He further highlighted that OCI will focus on enhancing profitability by increasing the share of high-value-added materials in its portfolio while simultaneously securing long-term growth opportunities.
