Origin and Hordijk partner to mass produce recyclable PET bottlecaps, advancing sustainable packaging through circular solutions and extrusion innovation.
Origin Materials, a technology-driven company focused on promoting the global shift toward sustainable materials, has announced a strategic alliance with Royal Hordijk Packaging, a renowned Dutch manufacturer of eco-friendly plastic packaging. The collaboration aims to scale up the production of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottlecaps on a mass level. With over a century of innovation in packaging, Hordijk is widely recognized for its commitment to sustainability and its expertise in circular packaging solutions. The company caters to a broad spectrum of industries, including food, personal care, pharmaceuticals, and horticulture, serving clients in more than 25 countries worldwide.
Under this partnership, Hordijk will utilize its PET extrusion technology to produce extruded PET sheets. These sheets will be used in CapFormer production lines—advanced high-speed equipment designed by Origin Materials. These lines, located within Hordijk’s European facilities, will convert the PET sheets into bottlecaps, including tethered cap designs, which are essential for enhanced recyclability and compliance with EU regulations.
John Bissell, CEO of Origin Materials, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. He noted that Hordijk brings deep manufacturing expertise and a solid European operational base, along with extensive global reach. He also highlighted the importance of Hordijk’s PET extrusion capabilities, which are expected to enhance the capital efficiency of the CapFormer lines. Bissell emphasized the shared goal of producing billions of PET bottlecaps, ushering in a new era in packaging that aligns with environmental and economic priorities.
Rik Hennink, CEO of Hordijk, echoed this sentiment, stating that the future of packaging lies in circularity. He affirmed Hordijk’s dedication to innovation and its mission to minimize environmental impact. According to Hennink, the partnership with Origin Materials and the investment in extrusion capabilities to support large-scale PET cap production is consistent with Hordijk’s long-term vision. He emphasized that mono-material packaging solutions, such as those developed by Origin, represent the next generation of high-performance, sustainable packaging.
The PET caps developed by Origin are positioned as a game-changer in the packaging industry. They offer enhanced recyclability—particularly with tethered designs—support lightweighting, and can extend product shelf life. These improvements are crucial in addressing the needs of the global packaging market, which is valued at over $65 billion. Through strategic collaborations with partners like Hordijk, Origin Materials is tackling some of the most complex challenges in sustainable manufacturing, reinforcing its mission to lead the global transition toward environmentally responsible materials.
