Polish Terminal to Support Construction of Baltica 2 Offshore Wind Farm

ORLEN Neptun, a subsidiary of the ORLEN Group, has signed a new contract with Smulders, a leading manufacturer of steel components for the offshore wind industry. This agreement expands the use of the newly-opened Swinoujscie Offshore Terminal, which is rapidly establishing itself as a key logistical and installation hub for offshore wind projects in the Baltic Sea region. The contract will see the terminal used for the storage and assembly of Service Inspection Platforms (SIPs) for the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, a major project being developed by the PGE and Ørsted consortium.

This latest deal follows a previous contract with Ocean Winds for the BC-Wind project, demonstrating the terminal’s growing importance and versatile capabilities. According to ORLEN, the Swinoujscie Offshore Terminal is designed to accommodate the largest vessels and components used in offshore wind installations, including turbines of around 15 MW. Its strategic location offers excellent multimodal access via rail, ferry, air, and road, while its inland position provides a natural advantage by ensuring more stable weather conditions for year-round operations. This makes the terminal an attractive and reliable partner for international projects not only in Poland but also in German, Swedish, and Danish waters.

Under the new contract, Smulders will lease a section of the terminal to facilitate the Baltica 2 project. The site will be used for the delivery, storage, and assembly of the crucial SIPs, which are then transported to their offshore locations on specialized vessels. The partnership also includes plans for a dedicated production facility at the terminal to handle preparatory, assembly, installation, and repair work, further integrating the supply chain.

The terminal's development is part of the ORLEN Group’s broader strategy to support its own offshore projects, which are progressing under Poland’s second phase of wind power expansion. The company holds licences to construct five wind farms in the Baltic Sea with a combined capacity of 5.2 GW. The most advanced of these is the Baltic East farm, a 1 GW project that is being prepared for a December auction. Four other licences in the Lawica Odrzanska area are also under development. The ORLEN Group aims to have three of these five projects operational by 2035, with full implementation of all projects scheduled by 2040.

Smulders, with its proven expertise in manufacturing offshore wind farm foundation structures, will play a critical role in the Baltica 2 project. The company will manufacture the internal platforms at its local plant in Zary, with the final assembly taking place at the Swinoujscie Offshore Terminal.
