Petrobras Invests R$870 million to Restart ANSA Fertilizer Plant

Petrobras has planned to allocate R$6 billion to the fertilizer sector over the next five years, encompassing both ongoing and prospective projects. Of this investment, R$870 million is designated for revitalizing operations at the Araucária Nitrogenados SA (ANSA) fertilizer facility in Paraná. The company anticipates accelerating the plant’s restart to May 2025, ahead of the original timeline. This investment strategy was unveiled on 15th August 2024 at a ceremony marking the recommencement of activities at the Paraná facility. Alongside CEO Magda Chambriard, the event was graced by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, company directors and advisors, government ministers, legislators, representatives from oil workers' unions, and the local workforce.

Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard announced that an investment of R$60 billion in the Brazilian refining sector, with R$3.2 billion specifically allocated to the Presidente Getúlio Vargas Refinery (Repar) for the 2024-2028 period. The announcement was made during a ceremony attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, along with Petrobras directors and advisors, ministers, parliamentarians, oil workers' unions, and the company's local workforce.

In her speech, CEO Magda Chambriard emphasized Petrobras's dedication to driving Brazil's growth through significant investments aligned with the Strategic Plan 2024-2028+. She highlighted the importance of regionalizing Petrobras's activities to harness their development potential for accelerating progress. Chambriard also stressed the role of Petrobras's workforce in Paraná, underscoring their contribution to showcasing the company's technical excellence and unwavering commitment to Brazil.

The plant is currently engaged in securing service contracts and procuring materials, aiming for a local content contribution exceeding 85%. Following the completion of these activities, maintenance contracts for services and equipment will be activated to commence operations. Positioned adjacent to Repar, Ansa boasts a production capacity of 720,000 tons per year of urea, accounting for 8% of the market, along with 475,000 tons per year of ammonia and 450,000 cubic meters per year of Automotive Liquid Reducing Agent (ARLA 32).

President Lula highlighted Petrobras's pivotal role in Brazil's energy landscape and its global significance. He praised the company's workforce for their contributions and innovation, underscoring that Petrobras is not merely an oil company but a key driver of development and technological advancement in Brazil. Lula emphasized that even as oil resources diminish, Petrobras will transition to specializing in alternative energy sources. He foresees Brazil leading in biofuels and fourth-generation ethanol, positioning Petrobras as a champion in these fields and a cornerstone of Brazil’s continued progress and innovation in the energy sector.
