POSCO and Franke launch eco-friendly stainless steel sink using low-carbon materials, emphasizing sustainability, innovation, and long-term partnership.

POSCO, a leading global steelmaker, announced on July 4 that it has collaborated with Franke, Europe’s top system kitchen appliance manufacturer, to launch a high-quality, eco-conscious stainless steel sink. This premium product is designed to meet the growing global demand for sustainable and low-carbon solutions in household appliances.

The newly unveiled stainless steel sink is made using POSCO’s proprietary eco-friendly steel materials, developed specifically to address global climate change and adhere to tightening international carbon regulations. A key feature of this product is its impressive use of recycled materials — over 90% of the steel used comes from iron scrap. This high proportion of recycled content significantly reduces the need for virgin raw materials and minimizes environmental impact.

To further lower the carbon footprint, POSCO has incorporated renewable energy sources, such as solar power systems installed at its steel production facilities. This integration of clean energy during manufacturing has resulted in a dramatic reduction in carbon emissions.

The product also underwent a rigorous verification process conducted by an independent third-party certification agency based in Germany. These inspections were carried out both online and in person from the early stages of development. The product successfully completed Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) verification, receiving validation for its outstanding sustainability. Notably, the carbon emissions from this stainless steel product were found to be 60% lower than those recorded in the Ministry of Environment’s Environmental Product Declaration.

Franke has expressed strong support for this initiative. Filippo Maltempi, who oversees purchasing and development at Franke, commented on the longstanding partnership with POSCO, which began in 2012. “We have steadily increased our purchase of materials from POSCO due to our consistent satisfaction with the quality of their stainless steel. This has led to POSCO becoming our largest stainless steel supplier,” said Maltempi.

From POSCO’s side, Lee Kyung-jin, head of the Stainless Steel Marketing Department, emphasized the company's ongoing commitment to sustainability and customer support. He noted, “POSCO will continue to actively assist customers in reducing carbon emissions, not only in kitchen sinks but also in other home appliances. This initiative is part of our broader strategy to enhance market competitiveness in the global stainless steel sector.”

This collaboration between POSCO and Franke reflects a shared vision for innovation, quality, and environmental responsibility. By offering products that are both premium in quality and low in carbon impact, the partnership sets a new standard for sustainable living in modern homes.
