PPG expands BPA-NI beverage can coatings to meet global demand, offering sustainable, high-performance solutions for diverse beverage applications.

PPG has expanded its portfolio of coatings for easy-open aluminum beverage can ends to meet rising global demand and stricter regulatory standards. These advanced coatings are specifically developed for the lids of aluminum cans to ensure beverage quality, extend shelf life, and enhance manufacturing efficiency. Engineered to eliminate the use of bisphenol A (BPA) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the coatings adhere to global food safety regulations and have undergone rigorous testing and validation by leading global canmakers and beverage brands.

The expanded product line includes three innovative coating series. First, the PPG INNOVEL® PRO PPG2489 series offers a high-performance internal coating tailored for high-speed stamping lines. It can withstand extreme temperatures and pressure conditions, making it suitable for a wide variety of beverage types. Secondly, the PPG Innovel EVO PPG6720 is a water-based internal coating formulated specifically for beer cans. Designed for applications requiring low film weight, it emits fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than traditional solvent-based coatings. This makes it a more sustainable option while still delivering high-quality protection and compliance with international standards. Lastly, the PPG iSENSE® PPG5018 series provides an external coating available in both clear and gold finishes. It is engineered for high-speed production environments, ensuring durability and aesthetics for the can exterior.

According to Viktoria Tager, Global Strategic Market Manager for Easy-Open Ends at PPG’s Packaging Coatings division, these solutions address critical challenges faced by the beverage industry. “Our newest coatings offer reliable performance across a broad range of beverage products and manufacturing conditions, all while meeting stringent food contact requirements,” she noted.

Key attributes of the newly introduced coatings include their sustainability, regulatory compliance, and global adaptability. For instance, the PPG Innovel PRO PPG2489 coating allows for reduced film thickness, which can lead to a 20% reduction in carbon emissions, aligning with environmental goals and operational efficiency. All three coatings are BPA-NI (Bisphenol-A Non-Intent) and PFAS-NI (Non-Intent), ensuring they meet evolving food contact material regulations worldwide.

The coatings are manufactured locally in the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, reducing production and logistics costs for PPG’s global customer base. Their versatility enables compatibility with various canmaking processes, including both 2-piece and 3-piece systems. Additionally, they offer the durability needed for hot-fill, pasteurization, and retort processing, maintaining structural integrity under demanding conditions.

In terms of performance, both PPG Innovel PRO PPG2489 and PPG iSENSE PPG5018 have been proven to safeguard beverages from corrosion, flavor contamination, and ingredient interaction. These coatings are well-suited for an extensive range of drinks, such as beer, seltzers, sparkling water, energy drinks, wine, juices, and ready-to-drink cocktails—especially those known as “hard-to-hold” due to their challenging chemical compositions.

By expanding these solutions, PPG strengthens its position in the metal packaging industry, providing reliable, compliant, and sustainable options for beverage manufacturers worldwide.
