PyroGenesis Canada Inc., a Montreal-based high-tech company focused on plasma-based sustainable solutions, confirmed that a leading global supplier of fumed silica has successfully verified the quality of its recently delivered product samples. This milestone follows the May 28, 2025, announcement from both PyroGenesis and HPQ Silicon Inc., its project partner.
The fumed silica samples were produced at the Fumed Silica Reactor (FSR) pilot plant developed by PyroGenesis for HPQ Silica Polvere Inc. (“Polvere”), a wholly owned subsidiary of HPQ. The samples underwent rigorous evaluation by the end client, a top-tier global player in the silica market. Normally, such verification tests require over 30 days using external facilities, but the client’s advanced in-house testing capabilities allowed completion in just five days. The results confirmed the material as high-quality fumed silica.
This verification represents a critical step toward advancing the FSR pilot program to its next testing phases. The data received will support efforts to optimize the production process as the technology moves from laboratory scale to pilot scale, aiming to replicate product quality consistently at larger volumes. These upcoming test phases will focus on process optimization and enhancing product quality over time.
The end client had previously signed a letter of intent with Polvere and had requested product samples for evaluation. The confirmation of the sample’s quality marks a significant milestone for all parties involved.
“This is another welcomed result on our journey with the fumed silica reactor project,” said P. Peter Pascali, president and CEO of PyroGenesis. “We look forward to continued collaboration with HPQ Polvere and their end client as we optimize the FSR pilot plant for future production.”
Fumed silica is a critical component in thousands of everyday products. It serves as a thickening and anti-caking agent across a wide range of industries, including personal care, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food processing, adhesives, inks, paints, construction, and electronics. It plays a crucial role in stabilizing and improving product texture and consistency.
PyroGenesis’ involvement in the development of fumed silica aligns with its broader strategic focus across three verticals: Energy Transition and Emission Reduction, Waste Remediation, and Commodity Security & Optimization. The fumed silica project fits within the third vertical, where PyroGenesis leverages plasma-based technologies to create advanced materials and recover valuable commodities from industrial waste, enhancing global resource efficiency.
With the successful sample validation, PyroGenesis is poised to further scale the technology and contribute to sustainable, high-performance material solutions for heavy industry.
