Shell and Technip Energies form exclusive alliance to scale carbon capture using Shell’s CANSOLV® technology, accelerating industrial decarbonisation efforts globally.
Shell Catalysts & Technologies and Technip Energies have formalized a global alliance agreement to collaborate exclusively on delivering post-combustion carbon capture solutions. This partnership leverages Shell’s proprietary CANSOLV® CO2 Capture System and Technip Energies’ expertise in integration and project execution to offer an optimized, end-to-end solution for industrial decarbonisation.
The alliance is designed to provide a high-performance, scalable, and investable carbon capture pathway tailored to meet the demands of hard-to-abate sectors. By combining Shell's leading amine-based capture technology with Technip Energies’ project management capabilities, the two companies aim to provide clients with a comprehensive solution that delivers efficiency, reliability, and long-term value.
Shell and Technip Energies will work exclusively together in this area, offering a unified approach that covers the entire lifecycle of a carbon capture project—from conceptualization to operational support. This integration ensures smooth execution, minimizes risk, and continuously enhances performance through feedback-driven improvement.
Robin Mooldijk, President of Projects & Technology at Shell, emphasized the importance of the agreement, noting that it represents a culmination of a long-standing partnership rooted in shared goals and successful project delivery. He said, “This agreement marks a significant milestone in a relationship built on shared ambition and delivery. Through our strengthened alliance with Technip Energies, we’re helping customers advance their decarbonisation plans, backed by deep expertise and more than a decade of working side by side.”
Arnaud Pieton, CEO of Technip Energies, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the power of combining advanced technology with strong engineering execution. “By forming a global alliance with Shell Catalysts & Technologies in the field of carbon capture, we combine cutting-edge technology, smart engineering and excellence in project execution. This global alliance is the result of more than 10 years of collaboration and continuous innovation,” he said. Pieton also introduced Canopy by T.EN™, a proprietary offering powered by Shell’s CANSOLV® system, which aims to provide industrial clients with affordable and reliable decarbonisation solutions.
The alliance is underpinned by a proven track record: currently, two CANSOLV facilities are in operation, and four additional projects using the CANSOLV technology have reached final investment decisions within the past two years. Among these is Net Zero Teesside Power, poised to become the world’s first gas-fired power plant equipped with carbon capture and storage (CCS).
Over the years, Shell and Technip Energies have worked together to enhance their carbon capture offerings through standardization, continuous innovation, and insights from real-world operations. Their unified approach aims to accelerate the deployment of CCS technologies globally and support the energy transition by offering scalable, efficient, and reliable decarbonisation pathways to industry stakeholders.
