Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. has launched a new range of silicone-based materials designed to improve the texture and functionality of personal care products. Developed as part of the company’s Shin-Etsu Silicones Solution-Engineering initiative, these products address key industry challenges, including evolving consumer demands, environmental concerns, and the need for improved production efficiency.
The latest offerings include two innovative silicones—KF-6070W and KF-6080W—which are derived from dimethicone, a commonly used silicone oil. In these products, some methyl groups have been replaced with hydrophilic functional groups, resulting in materials that are both water-compatible and retain the hallmark properties of silicones: smooth application, high fluidity, and a non-sticky finish.
KF-6070W is a water-soluble silicone wax designed to melt smoothly and spread easily on the skin. It is well-suited for water-based and oil-in-water (O/W) formulations used in hair care, skin care, and base makeup. Its key function is to enhance the tactile experience of products, providing a silky, pleasant texture.
KF-6080W, on the other hand, is a silicone emulsifier tailored for O/W formulations. Its liquid form at room temperature makes it ideal for cold process manufacturing, which helps simplify production and reduce energy use. This product allows formulators to create cosmetics with a lighter, less sticky feel—an increasingly important attribute in modern personal care products.
Also new to Shin-Etsu’s lineup are KSG-16-SF and KSG-19-PF, silicone elastomer gels that deliver high light-diffusion capabilities. KSG-16-SF offers a pronounced soft-focus effect, while KSG-19-PF provides a delicate, powdery finish. Both products are positioned as sustainable alternatives to microplastic beads, which are being phased out due to environmental concerns.
Shin-Etsu plans to showcase these new materials at CITE JAPAN 2025, the 12th Cosmetic Ingredients and Technology Exhibition. The event will be held May 14–16, 2025, at Pacifico Yokohama.
Silicones continue to play a vital role in enhancing the value and performance of personal care formulations. Available in diverse forms such as fluids, emulsions, gels, and powders, Shin-Etsu’s silicone technologies are engineered to deliver both functionality and sustainability. The company remains committed to expanding its silicone product lineup to meet the growing needs of cosmetic manufacturers worldwide.
