SIBUR has introduced a new grade of polypropylene—PPI003 EX—engineered specifically for the production of corrugated pipes. This new formulation boasts enhanced strength characteristics, making it well-suited for sewer and drainage infrastructure, where such pipes are commonly used.

Corrugated polypropylene pipes offer several practical advantages, including their light weight, flexibility and durability. These properties significantly simplify installation, even at depths of several meters. With a service life exceeding 50 years, these pipes are a reliable choice for long-term infrastructure needs.

Historically, Russian manufacturers of corrugated pipes have depended heavily on imported polypropylene to meet production requirements. However, recent fluctuations in foreign exchange rates and logistical challenges have resulted in a sharp increase in the cost of imported materials and have restricted supply channels. These developments underscored the urgent need for a domestically produced alternative.

The launch of PPI003 EX represents a strategic move to localize the production of high-performance materials. By supplying this new grade through ZapSibNeftekhim, SIBUR aims to fully meet the domestic market’s annual demand, which currently stands at approximately 36,000 metric tons. This development is expected to not only reduce procurement costs for Russian manufacturers but also minimize dependency on foreign suppliers.

Vasily Mashukov, director of applied development at SIBUR PolyLab, emphasized the collaborative nature of the innovation process. “The creation of PPI003 EX was the result of focused research and development by our teams at SIBUR PolyLab and ZapSibNeftekhim,” he said. “We systematically tested formulations to find the right balance of material characteristics. A pivotal achievement was the adoption of an alternative catalyst, which allowed us to reach the target mechanical properties—such as ring stiffness and impact resistance—while also maintaining stable production conditions.”

According to Mashukov, the combination of the new formulation and catalyst enabled the production of a competitive, high-quality product tailored specifically to the needs of the Russian market.

Ruslan Khairullin, director of the Engineering and Road Infrastructure Division at SIBUR, underscored the broader significance of the new product. “Corrugated pipes are essential to the modernization and replacement of existing sewer and drainage systems,” he said. “Their reliability and longevity make them vital to the development of modern infrastructure. The use of a domestically produced polypropylene grade will support the goals of the national ‘Infrastructure for Life’ project and accelerate the upgrading of utility networks in cities across Russia.”

With the debut of PPI003 EX, SIBUR is poised to play a key role in advancing the self-sufficiency and technological capabilities of Russia’s construction and infrastructure sectors.
