Siegwerk acquires Allinova, enhancing functional coating expertise, expanding sustainable packaging solutions, and strengthening its global position in the packaging coatings market.

Siegwerk Druckfarben AG & Co. KGaA, a prominent global supplier of printing inks and coatings for packaging and label applications, has announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Allinova, a Netherlands-based specialty chemicals company renowned for its coating expertise. Located in Hengelo, Allinova is recognized for its advanced technical capabilities, particularly in the development and production of water-based dispersions. Its product range includes polymer dispersions, wax emulsions, and adhesives, making it a strategic addition to Siegwerk’s portfolio of innovative packaging coatings.

According to Gilles Le Moigne, Business Head of Circular Economy Coatings (CEC) at Siegwerk, Allinova’s solutions align seamlessly with Siegwerk’s mission to deliver sustainable and cutting-edge coating technologies for the global packaging sector. He noted that this acquisition will merge Allinova’s specialized technical know-how with Siegwerk’s global market reach, enabling the company to deliver more advanced and application-focused solutions.

This move represents a pivotal step in Siegwerk’s growth strategy, extending its expertise beyond traditional converters into the papermill and film manufacturing sectors. The integration of Allinova’s high-performance technologies is expected to help Siegwerk meet the evolving demands of customers across diverse packaging applications.

Allinova’s founder, Gijs Elfrink, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that Siegwerk’s scale and resources will help advance Allinova’s products in the global marketplace. Established in 2005, Allinova initially specialized in flame retardants and wax emulsions. Business development accelerated in 2016 when Bob Horsthuis joined as co-owner, leading to a broader product portfolio that now includes high-quality dispersions, flame retardants, repellents, crosslinkers, and other specialty chemicals. Following the acquisition, both Elfrink and Horsthuis will remain with the company to ensure a smooth integration.

In April 2024, Siegwerk launched a dedicated global business unit focused on functional coatings aimed at supporting sustainable packaging solutions aligned with Circular Economy principles. Siegwerk’s CEO, Nicolas Wiedmann, emphasized that acquiring Allinova strengthens the company’s leadership in functional coatings, allowing it to better serve as a catalyst for circular packaging innovations across all technologies and applications. The CEC unit now acts as a hub for advanced coating technologies, complementing Siegwerk’s conventional coatings with specialized solutions.

The acquisition of Allinova follows Siegwerk’s series of strategic investments in recent years aimed at becoming a comprehensive provider of inks and coatings for the packaging market. For instance, in 2022, Siegwerk acquired La Sorgente, a major Italian supplier of flexographic printing inks, particularly for flexible packaging, paper, and board products. These targeted moves have expanded Siegwerk’s global footprint while reinforcing its expertise in packaging printing and coatings.
