SK Chemicals secured RecyClass certification for seven plastic materials, strengthening recyclability credentials and expanding opportunities in Europe’s circular economy market.

SK Chemicals has achieved a significant milestone by securing European recycling compatibility certification from RecyClass for seven of its plastic materials, bolstering its position in the global eco-friendly materials market. The company announced that its copolyester "ECOTRIA CLARO" and PET material "SKYPET" product lines have been verified for their recyclability within PET recycling processes by RecyClass, a non-profit, cross-industry initiative dedicated to advancing the circular economy for plastics in Europe.

This certification is a crucial development in the context of increasing global emphasis on sustainability and the European Union's mandatory plastic recycling regulations. RecyClass operates a rigorous system that verifies and certifies the recycling suitability of plastic materials based on comprehensive assessment protocols and design guidelines. The assessment, known as "Technical Approval (TA)," confirms that these materials can be stably utilized as recycled feedstock in actual recycling operations without adversely affecting existing processes or degrading quality, which is vital for effective recycling. Unverified materials, conversely, can lead to process abnormalities or quality issues, hindering recycling efforts.

Out of the seven products assessed, five copolyester products from the ECOTRIA CLARO line received a "fully compatible" rating, meaning they can be recycled without restrictions throughout the entire process. The remaining two SKYPET products, which are general-purpose plastics, were rated "conditionally compatible," indicating their recyclability under specific process conditions. This comprehensive verification validates the entire polyester material portfolio of SK Chemicals, encompassing copolyester, PET, recycled, and virgin materials, as viable feedstock for recycling.

The consequences of this achievement are far-reaching, particularly in economic, geopolitical, and industry-specific domains. Economically, the certification strengthens SK Chemicals' competitiveness and market access in Europe, a region at the forefront of circular economy initiatives. It positions the company to expand collaborations with European customers and stakeholders, leveraging its enhanced credibility in sustainable materials. From a geopolitical standpoint, this proactive response to EU regulations demonstrates SK Chemicals' commitment to global environmental standards and strengthens its international presence.

Industrially, this validation is a significant boost for SK Chemicals, as it officially recognizes the circular potential of its raw materials, aligning with the company's strategy to build a complete circular structure. President Ahn Jae-hyun emphasized that this verification is an official recognition of the circular potential as feedstock, a cornerstone of their complete circular structure. The company plans to continue accumulating technical expertise in recycling and reinforce its competitiveness across the entire value chain, from raw material to commercialization. This move is expected to accelerate SK Chemicals' push into the global eco-friendly materials sector by providing authoritative proof of its materials' recyclability from the design stage.
