South African Industrial Giant Omnia Hit by Black Basta Ransomware

South African industrial chemical producer Omnia suffered a ransomware attack by the notorious Black Basta group, which was discovered on June 10, 2024. The incident targeted the company's IT systems, leading to disruptions across its operations. Omnia is a significant player in the chemicals, fertilizers, and explosives sectors.

The Black Basta ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack and subsequently posted samples of Omnia's stolen data on its dark web leak site. This action confirms a data exfiltration event, a common tactic known as "double extortion" used by Black Basta. The exfiltrated data reportedly includes sensitive employee personal information, financial documents, and other proprietary company data. Black Basta, which emerged in April 2022, operates as a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) model and has targeted over 500 organizations globally across various critical infrastructure sectors. The group often gains initial access through phishing emails or by exploiting known vulnerabilities, then moves laterally to encrypt systems and steal data.

Following the discovery, Omnia immediately engaged cybersecurity experts to manage the incident and reported the breach to the Information Regulator. Despite the IT system disruptions, Omnia stated that its critical operational systems were isolated, allowing the company to continue its production activities. The company confirmed it would not pay the ransom demanded by Black Basta.
