Syensqo and Shell collaborate to deliver certified low-carbon ethylene oxide solutions, enabling industries to reduce emissions without compromising performance or reliability.

Syensqo and Shell Chemicals Europe B.V. have entered into a strategic collaboration aimed at accelerating the adoption of low-carbon solutions in the ethylene oxide (EO) value chain. This partnership focuses on delivering innovative, mass-balanced EO products that significantly reduce environmental impact while maintaining the high performance standards expected across agricultural and industrial applications.

As part of this initiative, Syensqo plans to roll out a new portfolio of EO-based solutions derived from Shell Chemicals’ lower-carbon feedstocks. These feedstocks are designed to achieve up to a 51% reduction in product carbon footprint (PCF) compared to traditional EO production methods. This substantial reduction is made possible through the integration of carbon capture utilisation (CCU) technologies, combined with a mass-balance accounting approach. This method ensures that the environmental benefits of lower-carbon inputs are proportionally allocated across the production system, enabling customers to access more sustainable products without altering their existing processes.

A key advantage of these new EO solutions is their “drop-in” compatibility. This means customers can seamlessly incorporate them into current formulations without the need for reformulation, requalification, or additional testing. The solutions are independently verified under the ISCC Carbon Footprint Certification (CFC), ensuring transparency, credibility, and alignment with global sustainability standards. As a result, businesses can confidently reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining consistent product quality, performance, and supply chain reliability.

According to Chloé Masselon, Sustainability Director at Syensqo, industries today face growing pressure from regulators, stakeholders, and consumers to lower emissions without sacrificing efficiency or reliability. By combining certified low-carbon raw materials with ready-to-use compatibility, this collaboration offers a practical, scalable pathway for companies to decarbonize their product lines quickly and effectively. It addresses both environmental goals and operational realities, making it easier for organizations to meet evolving market expectations.

This initiative also aligns with Syensqo’s broader sustainability strategy, known as the One Planet ambition. Under this framework, the company aims to reduce its Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions—particularly in key focus categories—by 25% by the year 2030, using 2021 as the baseline. Scope 3 emissions, which originate across the value chain, are often the most challenging to address. Therefore, partnerships like this one highlight the importance of collaboration among raw material suppliers, chemical manufacturers, and end-product producers.

Ultimately, the collaboration between Syensqo and Shell Chemicals Europe B.V. demonstrates that meaningful progress in reducing industrial carbon emissions requires coordinated efforts across the entire ecosystem. By leveraging advanced technologies, certified processes, and strategic partnerships, the companies are paving the way for a more sustainable future without compromising on performance or reliability.
