Syensqo launches stabilizers enabling durable translucent polypropylene use in automotive interiors and exteriors, improving UV resistance, clarity, aesthetics, and lifespan.

Syensqo has introduced an advanced stabilizer series, CYASORB® CYXTRA® V9800 and V9100, designed to broaden the application potential of translucent polypropylene (PP) in the automotive sector. This innovation addresses a longstanding challenge in automotive material engineering—balancing aesthetic appeal with long-term durability. As modern vehicle design trends increasingly emphasize transparency, lighting effects, and refined surface finishes, translucent PP has emerged as a promising material. However, its vulnerability to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and elevated temperatures has historically restricted its use, particularly in demanding interior and exterior automotive environments.

The newly launched CYASORB® CYXTRA® solutions aim to overcome these limitations by providing targeted stabilization tailored to specific application requirements. CYASORB® CYXTRA® V9800 has been specifically optimized for exterior automotive components, such as bumpers and trims, where exposure to sunlight necessitates strong UV resistance. This formulation helps maintain the material’s structural integrity and visual clarity despite prolonged outdoor exposure. On the other hand, CYASORB® CYXTRA® V9100 is engineered for interior applications, where materials are more susceptible to thermal stress rather than direct UV radiation. This variant ensures that translucent PP components used inside vehicles can withstand higher temperatures without compromising performance or appearance.

One of the most significant advantages of this stabilizer series is its ability to control discoloration and yellowing. Translucent polymers are particularly prone to aesthetic degradation when exposed to light and heat, often resulting in a yellow tint that diminishes their visual appeal. The CYASORB® CYXTRA® additives effectively minimize this effect, maintaining a low yellowness index and preserving the intended design aesthetics over time. In addition, the solutions ensure high light transmittance retention, which is crucial for applications where clarity and illumination are key design elements. By reducing haze and maintaining transparency, the materials retain their functional and decorative value throughout their lifecycle.

Another important benefit lies in the consistency of surface aesthetics. The stabilizers provide excellent gloss retention and prevent blooming, a phenomenon where additives migrate to the surface and create a hazy or uneven appearance. This ensures that automotive components retain a premium look and feel, even after extended use. Furthermore, the enhanced protection offered by these stabilizers extends the overall lifespan of the material by preserving both mechanical properties and visual quality. As a result, manufacturers can produce components that not only meet performance standards but also maintain their appeal over time.

According to Chen Ning, Vice President of Polymer Additives at Syensqo, this development reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions. By enabling the broader use of translucent polypropylene in challenging automotive applications, Syensqo is helping original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) achieve a balance between durability and distinctive design. This launch marks a significant step forward in material technology, supporting the evolving demands of next-generation automotive design.
