TOMRA Collection, a global leader in reverse vending technology—an automated system that uses machines to collect used beverage containers made from recycled PET (r-PET) for recycling—is strengthening its footprint in the Middle East by launching permanent operations in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The company has obtained all required certifications and licenses to operate in both nations, representing a key milestone in its mission to transform resource recovery across the region.
The newly established offices will serve as hubs for deploying TOMRA’s advanced reverse vending and sensor-based sorting solutions. These innovations support more sustainable practices in resource use, focusing on maximizing reuse and recycling. TOMRA’s physical presence also enables the company to provide on-the-ground expertise for the first time in these markets, strengthening its regional footprint and enhancing collaboration with local partners.
Tove Andersen, president and CEO of TOMRA, highlighted the strategic importance of the expansion. “Both the UAE and Saudi Arabia have committed to the Paris Agreement and adopted ambitious circular economy goals. TOMRA’s technologies are key to helping meet these targets and reducing the environmental impact of resource consumption globally. Establishing a regional presence allows our teams to engage more effectively with stakeholders, partners, and co-investors to develop long-term, impactful solutions,” Andersen said.
TOMRA’s technology is already in use in the region, particularly for advanced sorting of mixed waste and minerals. With permanent offices, the company plans to introduce a full range of reverse vending solutions tailored to both deposit and non-deposit (incentive-based) systems. These offerings aim to support governments and businesses in building more sustainable and efficient waste management ecosystems.
Saudi Arabia, with a population of about 38 million, currently recycles only 5–7% of household waste. At the same time, per capita bottled water consumption exceeds 200 liters annually, ranking among the highest globally. As part of its Vision 2030 initiative, the Saudi government aims to divert more than 90% of waste from landfills by 2034—a goal that aligns closely with TOMRA’s mission and solutions.
By establishing a local presence in the Middle East, TOMRA positions itself to play a crucial role in helping both countries transition to circular economies. The company’s expansion reflects a broader global shift toward sustainable resource management and supports the environmental ambitions of two of the region’s most dynamic economies.
TOMRA’s move underscores its commitment to fostering sustainable practices and forging partnerships that drive progress toward a more resource-responsible future.
