Tosoh Develops First-Ever Bio-Based Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene, Paving Way for Greener Industrial Materials

Tosoh Corporation has achieved a breakthrough in sustainable polymer technology with the development of the world’s first chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM) made from bio-based raw materials. Known as TOSO-CSM, this next-generation material marks a major advancement in reducing dependency on petroleum-based feedstocks while maintaining the high performance for which CSM is known. In addition, the company has successfully established the production technology needed for mass manufacturing of this environmentally friendly material, reinforcing its commitment to scalable innovation.

Chlorosulfonated polyethylene is widely recognized for its superior durability, chemical resistance, and weatherability, making it suitable for use in a variety of demanding industrial applications. TOSO-CSM is commonly used in adhesives, rubberized fabrics, hoses, wires, seals, and handrails. One of its defining attributes is its ability to extend the service life of the products it is incorporated into, reducing the need for frequent replacements and contributing to overall reductions in material waste and environmental burden.

While traditional TOSO-CSM already requires relatively less petroleum than many standard plastics, the chemical industry faces mounting pressure to further reduce the carbon footprint of raw materials and processes. In response to growing environmental and regulatory demands, Tosoh embarked on a mission to minimize fossil fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions without compromising material quality or performance.

Drawing on decades of experience in polymer development and expertise in bio-based chemistry, Tosoh has successfully formulated a new version of CSM that replaces more than 90 percent of its carbon atoms with bio-based sources. This shift significantly reduces reliance on fossil fuels and contributes to a lower carbon footprint across the product’s life cycle—from raw material extraction and manufacturing to usage and end-of-life disposal.

According to Tosoh, the bio-based TOSO-CSM achieves approximately a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional petroleum-based CSM. This performance makes it a strong contender for companies and industries seeking to meet stringent sustainability goals and carbon reduction targets while still requiring high-functioning materials.

Importantly, the bio-based version retains the essential mechanical and chemical properties of conventional TOSO-CSM. This ensures a seamless transition for existing users while offering an environmentally responsible alternative that aligns with corporate and global sustainability initiatives.
