TotalEnergies has achieved a significant milestone by successfully converting feedstocks from plastic waste into circular polymers at its polypropylene plant in La Porte, Texas, USA. This plant, recognized as one of the world's largest polypropylene sites, is now set to produce sustainably certified polymers that can be applied across various sectors, including food-grade packaging.

The plastic waste utilized as feedstock for this groundbreaking initiative was sourced from New Hope Energy's advanced recycling facility in Tyler, Texas, which holds the ISCC+ certification. The feedstock underwent a transformative process, starting with its conversion into monomers at the BASF TotalEnergies Petrochemicals (BTP) facility. BTP is a joint venture with a 60/40 ownership split between BASF and TotalEnergies, and it operates out of Port Arthur, Texas. Following the conversion into monomers, the feedstock was then further processed into circular polymers at TotalEnergies' polypropylene plant in La Porte, Texas. Both the La Porte and BTP facilities received their ISCC+ certification in the year 2022, attesting to their commitment to sustainable practices.

A pivotal aspect of TotalEnergies' journey towards circular polymers involves a strategic partnership with New Hope Energy, formalized through a multi-year agreement. Under this agreement, New Hope Energy will consistently supply TotalEnergies with petrochemical feedstock derived from plastics, supporting the production of recycled polymers. New Hope Energy employs a patented pyrolysis technology, developed in collaboration with Lummus Technology, to process and convert mixed plastic waste. This technology plays a crucial role in diverting plastics away from landfills or incineration, contributing to a more sustainable waste management cycle.

The partnership between TotalEnergies and New Hope Energy exemplifies a shared commitment to advancing sustainable practices in the petrochemical industry.
