Toyochem expands Labelmelt adhesives globally, supporting PET bottle recycling, reducing waste, and enabling sustainable circular packaging solutions.
Toyochem Co., Ltd., the polymer materials division of Japan’s artience Group, is expanding the international reach of its Labelmelt™ series, a line of alkali-soluble hot-melt adhesives developed for roll-fed film labels. Already recognized as Japan’s leading supplier of hot-melt adhesives for PET bottle labeling, the company is now introducing this advanced solution to global markets as industries worldwide seek more sustainable and recyclable packaging options.
The Labelmelt series is specifically designed to support efficient bottle-to-bottle recycling by enabling labels to detach cleanly during the alkaline washing process used in PET recycling. This ensures that adhesive residue does not remain on the bottle surface, helping to produce high-purity recycled PET flakes. By reducing contamination during recycling, the technology improves the quality of recycled plastic and strengthens efforts toward a closed-loop circular economy.
As global sustainability regulations such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) continue to gain momentum, manufacturers are under increasing pressure to adopt packaging solutions that improve recyclability and reduce environmental impact. Toyochem aims to help brands and beverage producers meet these growing demands by providing adhesive technologies that support both operational efficiency and environmental compliance.
Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Technical Manager of Toyochem, expressed confidence in the company’s international expansion, stating that the Labelmelt series has already proven highly successful in Japan and is well-positioned to serve overseas markets. He explained that these hot-melt adhesives are specially optimized for high-speed roll-label applications, delivering strong and durable adhesion on both PET and glass surfaces. This makes them ideal for large-scale beverage production lines where speed, consistency, and reliability are critical.
One of the key advantages of Labelmelt adhesives is their alkali-soluble property. During the recycling process, labels can be separated from the container in an alkaline bath without leaving behind adhesive traces. This feature significantly enhances recycling efficiency and improves the purity of the recovered PET material. According to Yamaguchi, this is particularly important for bottle-to-bottle recycling systems where contamination can lower the quality and value of recycled plastic.
Hot-melt adhesive use also plays a major role in the growing popularity of roll-fed labels, which are known for their speed and cost-effectiveness in high-volume production environments. Internal testing conducted by Toyochem has shown that roll labels generate approximately 70% lower carbon emissions during the labeling process compared to alternatives such as adhesive labels and shrink-wrap sleeve labels.
In addition to carbon footprint reduction, roll-fed labels also contribute to major material savings. Since they eliminate the need for liners, they reduce raw material consumption and can lower material costs by an estimated 85% compared to traditional adhesive labels. Furthermore, roll labels are generally thinner than conventional shrink sleeve films, resulting in nearly 40% less material usage. These benefits make roll-fed labeling an economical and environmentally responsible solution for beverage manufacturers.
Yamaguchi emphasized that roll-fed labeling technology remains one of the most efficient and eco-friendly choices for modern beverage packaging. By combining this method with Labelmelt adhesives, Toyochem aims to help global brands transition toward packaging designs that meet both business needs and sustainability goals.
The Labelmelt series also complies with the strict Voluntary Design Guidelines established by Japan’s Council for PET Bottle Recycling, ensuring compatibility with high-quality recycling standards. Beyond Labelmelt, Toyochem offers a broad portfolio of environmentally friendly hot-melt solutions, including thermal label adhesives and UV-curable products. Each product is developed to meet specific performance requirements while integrating smoothly with existing manufacturing equipment and coating systems.
Through this global expansion, Toyochem is reinforcing its commitment to innovation, recycling efficiency, and sustainable packaging solutions for the future.
