In China, feedstock toluene prices remained under pressure as downstream enterprises entered the traditional off-season, reducing purchasing enthusiasm and limiting procurement. Lower toluene costs reduced replacement expenses for Benzyl chloride producers and allowed exporters to maintain competitive offers into the US. Meanwhile, US buyers had increased procurement ahead of China’s typhoon season to mitigate disruptions and relied on existing inventories. Asia-to-North America West Coast ocean freight increased 1.23%, raising import costs, although weekly freight rates declined recently and offered relief.
US downstream demand remained moderate to soft, particularly in polymers and construction. Homebuilder confidence fell to 34 in July, marking the 15th consecutive month below 40, while 37% reported price reductions and 63% used sales incentives. These indicators reflected housing weakness. However, polymer demand is likely to improve after summer, potentially supporting Benzyl chloride consumption and prices. Fertilizer demand remained moderate, while August agricultural consumption and September fall fertilizer preparation may provide additional support.
According to Chemanalysts data, Benzyl chloride prices likely to increase due to following reasons. Polymer demand is expected to improve after summer, encouraging replenishment and supporting prices. However, continued Asian availability and competitive export offers may limit a rapid recovery.
Port congestion across Asian hubs may intensify as overseas buyers secure cargoes ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. Delays could tighten prompt Benzyl chloride availability and encourage firmer offers.
Preparations for winter-related supply risks may also encourage precautionary inventory building across the US, while buyers could increase procurement ahead of year-end holidays and adverse winter weather.
Seasonal demand is expected to provide gradual support. Agricultural consumption should continue through August, while fall fertilizer preparation and retailer restocking are likely to begin in September. Polymer demand could strengthen following summer, supporting Benzyl chloride pricing. Nevertheless, comfortable Benzyl chloride imports and cautious buying may restrain gains, keeping the outlook moderately firm rather than sharply bullish.
