Versalis and Veritas Partner to Advance Plastic Recycling Initiatives

Versalis and Veritas partner in Venice to recycle plastics, converting EPS waste into high-quality materials, promoting circular economy and sustainability.

Versalis, the chemical subsidiary of Eni, and Veritas, one of Italy’s leading multi-utility companies operating across the Metropolitan City of Venice and parts of the Province of Treviso, have entered into a strategic agreement to advance plastic recycling and promote circular economy practices. The collaboration was formally signed by Adriano Alfani, Chief Executive Officer of Versalis, and Andrea Razzini, General Manager of Veritas. The partnership is designed to develop initiatives that enhance the recovery and reuse of both post-consumer and post-industrial plastics, positioning Venice as a hub of innovation in sustainable waste management.

The two companies will join forces to identify and evaluate waste streams and secondary raw materials collected by Veritas’s facilities. These will then be assessed for their potential integration into Versalis’s advanced recycling processes. The objective is to convert waste into high-quality recycled plastics, reducing environmental impact while simultaneously creating value from materials that would otherwise be discarded.

Central to this initiative is the Fusina Ecodistretto, located in the industrial area of Porto Marghera. Operated by Veritas through its subsidiaries, this integrated waste treatment hub represents a model of industrial symbiosis. Multiple treatment plants work together within the site to optimize energy efficiency and minimize emissions. The agreement between Versalis and Veritas seeks to build on this foundation by establishing a robust local supply chain dedicated to producing high-grade recycled plastics.

The first operational step will involve the recycling of expanded polystyrene (EPS) waste, with a particular emphasis on discarded boxes commonly used in the fishing industry. These waste materials will be processed at Versalis’s new recycling facility in Porto Marghera, which became operational in March 2025. At full capacity, the plant will be capable of producing up to 20,000 tonnes annually of crystal polystyrene (r-GPPS) and expandable polystyrene (r-EPS). Both products will be derived from secondary raw materials sourced from post-consumer EPS waste.

The Porto Marghera site plays a strategic role in the transformation of the Venice petrochemical district. Its conversion marks a crucial step in the broader relaunch and sustainability plan for Versalis, which was formalized at Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy. The initiative underscores the company’s broader commitment to transitioning towards greener, circular production models.

Commenting on the partnership, Versalis CEO Adriano Alfani stated, “This agreement reinforces our dedication in Porto Marghera to promoting plastics circularity, combining the industrial and technological expertise of Versalis with the strategic collaboration of Veritas.”

Veritas’s General Manager, Andrea Razzini, emphasized the importance of collaboration between citizens and industry: “For effective recycling of urban waste, citizen participation in proper waste separation is essential, alongside efficient facilities capable of turning waste back into raw material. This agreement turns those requirements into tangible results, creating a positive environmental impact for the City of Venice and its metropolitan area.”
