Weak Downstream Demand and Elevated Inventories Pressure India PPFY Prices

George Orwell 30-Jul-2026
India’s Polypropylene Filament Yarn (PPFY) market remained cautious in July 2026 despite a modest improvement in June, as higher feedstock costs provided only limited support while downstream demand stayed subdued. Textile manufacturers, home-textile producers, and carpet makers maintained conservative procurement due to seasonal weakness, while automotive-related demand also remained soft with purchases restricted to immediate requirements. Export enquiries from key overseas markets remained stable, although traders avoided aggressive stocking. On the supply side, domestic manufacturers continued operating at steady rates, and regular import arrivals ensured comfortable product availability throughout the market. Temporary logistics challenges at major ports slowed cargo movement but did not significantly disrupt supply chains. Looking ahead, the market is expected to weaken during the third quarter as softer feedstock polypropylene prices, elevated yarn inventories, and cautious buying continue to weigh on sentiment. Adequate domestic production and steady import flows are expected to maintain sufficient supply, limiting the possibility of any meaningful price recovery unless downstream textile demand improves significantly.

India’s Polypropylene Filament Yarn (PPFY) market is expected to remain bearish in July 2026, supported by weaker production costs and limited downstream enquiries. PPFY prices are forecast to decline by 5–7% during the month as key feedstock polypropylene (PP) prices remain soft despite weekly fluctuations. Supply of PPFY is expected to remain sufficient, while downstream buying interest is likely to stay cautious, limiting the scope for any meaningful price recovery.

Although the PPFY market ended June with a modest 0.43% month-on-month increase, supported by firmer upstream polypropylene costs, the overall sentiment remained subdued. Early June witnessed a slightly firmer tone as higher feedstock costs were partially passed through by PPFY producers. However, by mid-month, steady domestic availability and regular import arrivals prevented stronger price gains. Late June saw only marginal increases within the established trading range, as downstream buyers—affected by seasonal demand patterns—continued to procure only according to immediate requirements. Overall, ChemAnalyst data indicates that PPFY price movements remained gradual and controlled rather than volatile.

Demand patterns across key end-use sectors remained uneven, reinforcing the restrained movement in PPFY prices. The textile sector, including home textiles, carpets, and general yarn applications, experienced weaker demand as monsoon-related seasonality reduced fresh procurement from manufacturers. Home-textile producers and carpet manufacturers adopted a cautious purchasing strategy, while export demand from destinations such as Bangladesh and Turkey remained stable, with enquiries continuing but traders avoiding aggressive inventory accumulation. Demand for PPFY from automotive interior fabric manufacturers also remained muted, with purchases restricted to immediate production needs. Industry averages recorded only a marginal month-on-month increase, highlighting that the June price improvement was largely cost-driven rather than supported by stronger downstream demand for PPFY.

On the supply side, PPFY market fundamentals remained broadly balanced. Domestic PPFY manufacturers maintained stable operating rates throughout June, with no major maintenance shutdowns reported, ensuring comfortable product availability. Regular import arrivals from China and Gulf countries further supplemented domestic supply and prevented any significant market tightness. At the same time, higher polypropylene injection-moulding costs provided temporary cost support to PPFY producers, limiting sharper price declines during June. Logistics challenges, including high yard utilization at Mundra Port and vessel bunching and gate restrictions at Nhava Sheva, occasionally slowed inland cargo movement. Nevertheless, supply chains remained operational without causing major disruptions, allowing PPFY availability to remain stable.

Looking ahead, ChemAnalyst analysis indicates that the PPFY market is likely to face continued downside pressure during the third quarter. Weak downstream textile demand, elevated yarn inventories, soft feedstock polypropylene prices, and cautious procurement are expected to weigh on PPFY prices, while adequate domestic production and regular import flows should continue to maintain comfortable market supply.
