Indian Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate (ALS) prices extended their upward trajectory in August 2026, supported by tightening merchant availability, elevated Fatty Alcohol C18 costs, and seasonal procurement ahead of the festive period. Domestic producers in Maharashtra and Gujarat continued to prioritize specialty surfactant operations, limiting merchant ALS volumes and keeping the near-term supply balance relatively tight. Meanwhile, constrained import replenishment through major western Indian ports further restricted availability. These conditions strengthened seller negotiating power and encouraged buyers to secure material for upcoming production requirements, supporting the continued rise in ALS prices throughout August.
The July market established the foundation for the August bullish trend. ALS supply tightened as producers in Maharashtra and Gujarat redirected utilities toward newly commissioned specialty surfactant operations, reducing merchant availability without triggering formal shutdowns. Logistics frictions at Nhava Sheva also slowed replenishment and limited arbitrage opportunities for distributors. The resulting inventory squeeze strengthened seller confidence and encouraged buyers to secure material against upcoming production requirements, supporting firmer ALS market conditions throughout August.
On the demand side, July procurement remained supportive, particularly from personal-care and FMCG manufacturers. Shampoo, bodywash, and other formulation producers increased purchasing ahead of the festive production cycle, while large FMCG buyers replenished safety stocks and secured additional ALS raw materials. Detergent and household-cleaner manufacturers contributed steady, although less aggressive, buying interest. Against this backdrop, the Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate Ex-Mumbai assessment rose to USD 953.45/MT at the end of July from USD 930.96/MT at the beginning, marking an increase of approximately 2.4%.
Cost fundamentals are also expected to reinforce the August increase. Fatty Alcohol C18 CFR JNPT values increased by around 1.7% during July, raising production costs for domestic surfactant manufacturers. Ammonia-related cost uncertainty associated with Strait of Hormuz disruptions could further increase replacement costs and strengthen the cost floor for ALS producers, supporting ALS offers. If upstream values remain firm, suppliers are likely to resist discounts and maintain higher offers during August, particularly for ALS, where merchant inventories remain limited.
In September 2026, Indian ALS prices are expected to remain firm with a moderate upward bias, supported by tight domestic availability, elevated Fatty Alcohol C18 costs, and steady downstream procurement. However, higher operating rates and improved import flows through Nhava Sheva could gradually ease supply constraints and moderate the pace of price increases.
