Xylem will design, build, and operate advanced water reuse systems for Dow’s Alberta facility, supporting sustainability and Path2Zero goals.

Global water technology leader Xylem has announced a significant expansion of its long-standing collaboration with Dow through a landmark agreement to design, construct, and operate advanced water infrastructure at Dow’s large industrial facility in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. The partnership is aimed at supporting the growing operational requirements associated with Dow’s ambitious Path2Zero initiative, which focuses on advancing sustainable and lower-emission manufacturing operations.

The new agreement represents a major step forward in the relationship between the two companies and reinforces their shared commitment to sustainable industrial water management. Under the terms of the contract, Xylem will provide a comprehensive, end-to-end solution covering engineering, process design, construction, and long-term operation of sophisticated water systems. These systems will ensure a dependable supply of high-quality water while enabling efficient treatment and reuse throughout the industrial complex. The project is scheduled to become fully operational by August 2028.

According to Rodney Aulick, Executive Vice President and President of Water Solutions and Services at Xylem, the agreement marks an important achievement for the company. He emphasized that the project reflects the strength of the enduring relationship between Xylem and Dow, built on years of trust and successful collaboration. Aulick noted that customer partnerships remain at the heart of Xylem’s business strategy and highlighted the project as an example of how integrated water management solutions can address industrial water challenges. By combining water sourcing, treatment, and reuse within a single system, Xylem aims to deliver a seamless and highly efficient approach to industrial water management.

Dow also expressed confidence in the expanded partnership. Skya Kruithof, President of Dow Canada, stated that Xylem has consistently proven itself to be a reliable partner capable of delivering critical water infrastructure and operational support. The ability to provide water with consistent quality, reliability, and efficiency is considered essential for maintaining safe and effective operations as Dow advances its Path2Zero program.

A key component of the project is the development of a fully integrated water management system that oversees the entire water lifecycle across the facility. Xylem will implement advanced multi-stage treatment technologies capable of transforming raw water into water suitable for industrial use while also recovering and treating water generated from cooling systems and industrial processes. This treated water will then be converted into a high-quality reusable resource that can be reintroduced into operations.

The system will perform several important functions, including treating raw water for industrial applications, converting process water into reusable supplies, and optimizing overall performance through long-term operational management. By assuming responsibility for the design, delivery, and operation of the entire system, Xylem will serve as Dow’s single point of accountability for water quality, system performance, and supply reliability.

One of the most innovative aspects of the project is its large-scale water reuse capability. By converting processed water into a valuable resource, the system is expected to substantially reduce the facility’s dependence on freshwater sources. This approach not only improves operational efficiency but also enhances resilience against water supply challenges. Furthermore, reducing freshwater consumption will help lessen pressure on local water resources, creating environmental and community benefits alongside industrial advantages.

The agreement also establishes a new benchmark for industrial water management by demonstrating how integrated technologies, engineering expertise, and long-term operational support can be combined into a single solution. It further strengthens Xylem’s position as a strategic partner for industries seeking practical, performance-driven methods to address increasingly complex water management challenges while supporting sustainability goals and long-term growth.
