Product Description
Chlorinated paraffin is a group of synthetic chemicals made by reacting straight-chain hydrocarbons (paraffins) with chlorine, producing oily, colorless to yellowish liquids or waxy solids that contain varying amounts of chlorine and are classified as short-, medium-, or long-chain chlorinated paraffins based on the length of their carbon chains. These substances are widely used as flame retardants, plasticizers, lubricants, and additives in products such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber, paints, sealants, adhesives, metalworking fluids, and textiles because they improve flexibility, reduce flammability, and enhance resistance to chemicals and wear. Despite their useful industrial properties, some chlorinated paraffins—particularly short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs)—have raised significant environmental and health concerns because they are persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic to aquatic organisms, and can accumulate in the food chain, leading many countries to restrict or ban their use. Medium- and long-chain chlorinated paraffins are still used in various applications, although they are also under increasing regulatory scrutiny due to concerns about their environmental persistence and potential risks to human health. As a result, industries are increasingly exploring safer alternative additives that provide similar performance while reducing environmental and health impacts.
