Product Description
Cresylic acid is a mixture of methyl-substituted phenols (primarily the ortho-, meta-, and para-cresol isomers, along with other alkyl phenols) obtained from coal tar, petroleum refining, or synthetic chemical processes. It is a colorless to yellowish liquid with a strong phenolic odor and is valued for its antiseptic, solvent, and chemical intermediate properties. Cresylic acid is widely used in the manufacture of disinfectants, resins, antioxidants, plasticizers, dyes, pesticides, explosives, and pharmaceuticals, as well as in specialty solvents and industrial cleaning products. It is also used as a raw material in the production of phenolic resins and other high-performance chemicals. Although highly useful in industrial applications, cresylic acid is corrosive and toxic, with exposure capable of causing skin and eye burns, respiratory irritation, and harmful systemic effects if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin. Because of these hazards, it must be handled with appropriate protective equipment, adequate ventilation, and careful storage and disposal practices to minimize risks to workers and the environment.
