Danimer Scientific which is a leading player in biodegradable polymers in the United States recently announced the acquisition of Novomer which is a leading developer of biopolymers. The acquisition includes a cash transaction of USD 152 million which includes Novomer’s research centre and pilot plant in Rochester, New York.

Danimer is a major next generation bioplastics company which develops and produces biodegradable materials. The company has around 390 patents and pending applications in more than 20 countries for a diverse range of production processes and biodegradable polymer formulations.

Biodegradable polymers are plastic products which are biodegradable in nature and are compostable. They degrade over time and return back to nature instead of polluting the environment. Various biodegradable polymers are Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) and Polycaprolactum (PC) etc.

Biodegradable polymers are growing in demand in the present scenario globally. The demand is expected to grow at a healthy rate in the upcoming years as the countries become more and more conscious about the effects of climate change and pollution.

As per ChemAnalyst, “the acquisition by Danimer is aimed at expanding its technological expertise to other biodegradable polymers and to capture the major share of the growing Biodegradable Polymers demand in the United States.”
