Airbus and TotalEnergies have entered into a strategic partnership geared towards addressing the pressing issue of aviation decarbonization through the utilization of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Aligned with the ambitious goal of achieving net carbon neutrality within the aviation sector by 2050, this collaboration seeks to make significant strides in reducing CO2 emissions. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are poised to play a pivotal role in this endeavor, as they can potentially decrease CO2 emissions by up to 90% over their lifecycle compared to conventional fossil fuels. Under this partnership, TotalEnergies will supply Airbus with sustainable aviation fuel to fulfill over half of its requirements within Europe.

A cornerstone of this partnership is a dedicated research and innovation program focused on the development of 100% sustainable fuels tailored to both current and future aircraft designs. Additionally, the program will explore the influence of sustainable aviation fuel compositions on CO2 emission reduction and non-CO2 effects, such as contrail formation.

The development of sustainable aviation fuels stands at the forefront of TotalEnergies' transition strategy. The company is fully committed to leveraging this strategic alliance with Airbus to contribute to the collective effort of aviation decarbonization. TotalEnergies has been proactively addressing the increasing industry demand for carbon footprint reduction and has established an ambitious goal of reaching an annual sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production capacity of 1.5 million tons by 2030.

The acceleration of sustainable aviation fuel deployment is imperative for Airbus to meet its carbon emissions reduction targets by 2030. This partnership underscores the collaborative spirit between aerospace manufacturers and major energy producers and suppliers in tackling the challenge of aviation decarbonization. Airbus is steadfast in its determination to achieve decarbonization objectives and ensure that aviation continues to fulfill its crucial societal role in the years to come.
