This partnership will accelerate the delivery of a critical energy asset that will establish a new LNG corridor for supplying gas from the U.S. Permian Basin to markets in Asia and Latin America.
In a major development for the global energy sector, AMIGO LNG SA de CV, a Mexican joint venture, has formally awarded a pivotal Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract to Drydocks World. The agreement tasks the Dubai-based shipyard with the fabrication and delivery of what is set to become the world's largest Floating LNG (FLNG) liquefaction facility, along with its associated Floating Storage Units (FSU) infrastructure.
The contract signing marks a significant milestone for the project, which will be constructed at Drydocks World’s state-of-the-art facility in Dubai. The project scope includes the conversion of existing LNG carriers into Floating Storage Units (FSUs) to support the new liquefaction operations. Additionally, the shipyard will construct new-build FLNG barges that will incorporate advanced U.S.-based pre-treatment and liquefaction technologies. This integrated solution is designed to deliver a massive production capacity of over 4.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), a figure that surpasses any existing floating LNG development.
The FLNG approach provides several key advantages over traditional onshore LNG plants. By conducting fabrication and preparation simultaneously, the project is expected to have a faster time to market. This method also allows for rigorous testing and seamless pre-commissioning in a controlled environment, ensuring higher quality and reliability. Crucially, the FLNG solution significantly reduces the environmental footprint by eliminating the need for extensive onshore construction, including long pipelines and dredging.
Dr. Muthu Chezhian, CEO of LNG Alliance, emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership. "By partnering with Drydocks World on the world's largest FLNG facility, we are securing best-in-class quality, exceptional production capacity, and reliable long-term performance," he stated. He also highlighted the environmental benefits and accelerated project schedule that FLNG technology provides.
Captain Rado Antolovic, PhD, CEO of Drydocks World, affirmed the company's strong position to deliver on the landmark project. "With a proven track record in complex offshore conversions and large-scale fabrications, Drydocks World is well-positioned to deliver this landmark facility to the highest international standards," he said.
The new facility will be located at the AMIGO LNG terminal in Guaymas, Mexico. Its strategic location on Mexico's west coast will be a game-changer for global energy logistics. Sourcing feed gas from the prolific U.S. Permian Basin, the terminal will enable the direct export of LNG to key demand centers in Asia and Latin America.
