Anaergia Inc, a global leader in converting organic waste into renewable natural gas (RNG), has finalized a significant contract with New Jeju Bio Co. Ltd. to design and construct the Jeju Bio Energy Biogas Plant. This landmark project, valued at approximately C$40 million, marks a substantial expansion of Anaergia's presence in the Asian market.
The contract encompasses a main agreement worth C$30 million and a supplementary agreement valued at C$10 million. While the contract's completion is subject to routine conditions, including the client securing financial close, Anaergia anticipates the facility will be operational by mid-to-late 2027. This development builds upon a previously announced Letter of Award on September 3, 2024, with the increased contract value reflecting an expanded scope and enhanced project size.
The Jeju Bio Energy Biogas Plant is poised to become a cornerstone of Jeju Island's environmental sustainability efforts. The facility is designed to process approximately 54,000 tons of diverse organic waste annually, including waste from slaughterhouses and undigested sludge from local sewage treatment plants. This organic feedstock will be transformed into approximately two megawatts of renewable energy, significantly contributing to the island's clean energy goals.
The biogas generated will fuel a combined heat and power (CHP) system, providing both electricity and heat. This energy will be crucial for powering various internal operations within the plant, such as digestion, pasteurization, evaporation, and digestate drying, thereby maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing external energy reliance.
Beyond energy generation, the project incorporates advanced wastewater treatment and recycling systems on-site. This commitment to water stewardship ensures adherence to stringent discharge regulations, further enhancing the facility's environmental footprint. By converting organic waste into renewable energy and treating wastewater, the Jeju Bio Energy Biogas Plant will play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting comprehensive waste recycling across Jeju Island, aligning with the island's ambitious "2030 Waste Free Jeju" declaration.
This project reinforces Anaergia's position as a pioneering technology company in RNG sector. With over 250 patents dedicated to converting organic waste into sustainable solutions like RNG, fertilizer, and water, Anaergia is committed to addressing a significant source of greenhouse gases through cost-effective processes. Their proprietary technologies, coupled with extensive engineering expertise and a proven track record of delivering hundreds of innovative projects globally, enable them to offer an integrated portfolio of end-to-end solutions, encompassing solid waste processing, wastewater treatment, organics recovery, high-efficiency anaerobic digestion, and biomethane production.
