Angola Uncovers Significant Offshore Gas Reserves in Landmark Exploration Achievement

Angola discovers major offshore gas reserves in Lower Congo Basin, marking a historic first in dedicated natural gas exploration efforts.

Angola has achieved a landmark in its energy exploration history with the discovery of major offshore natural gas reserves, as per recent media reports. This milestone was officially announced by the National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG), which confirmed that Azule Energy—a joint venture between BP and Eni—successfully completed drilling operations at the Gajajeira-01 well. Located in the Lower Congo Basin, this well is the first in Angola specifically drilled for natural gas, representing a significant pivot from the nation’s traditional focus on oil extraction.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the Gajajeira-01 well holds over one trillion cubic feet of natural gas and approximately 100 million barrels of condensates. These figures suggest a major potential boost in Angola’s energy output, positioning the country as an emerging player in the natural gas domain. Adriano Mongini, CEO of Azule Energy, emphasized the importance of this discovery, stating, “This is a historic moment for gas exploration in Angola. The success of the Gajajeira-01 well strengthens our confidence in the untapped potential of the Lower Congo Basin.”

The discovery was made within Block 1/14, operated by Azule Energy, which maintains a 35% ownership stake. The remaining shares in the exploration consortium are held by Equinor (30%), Sonangol E&P (25%), and Acrep, an Angolan private company (10%). This collaborative venture underscores the growing interest and investment in Angola’s offshore energy resources.

The successful drilling of Gajajeira-01 signals a strategic shift for Angola’s energy future. The country has long been reliant on crude oil as its primary hydrocarbon product. However, this discovery marks the beginning of a more diversified energy portfolio, particularly significant in the aftermath of Angola's 2023 decision to exit the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). While Angola remains committed to maintaining oil production levels, its leadership is now aiming to develop its natural gas sector to support domestic energy demands, foster economic growth, and explore liquefied natural gas (LNG) export opportunities.

According to media reports, Angola’s government views natural gas as a cornerstone of its revised national energy strategy. The discovery in Block 1/14 could be the first of many, as similar exploration efforts are being considered in the Lower Congo and Kwanza basins. Analysts suggest that if subsequent findings match or exceed the Gajajeira-01 success, Angola could evolve into a significant regional gas hub within the next decade.

This breakthrough not only redefines Angola's exploration capabilities but also positions the country to play a key role in Africa's future gas markets, boosting energy security, exports, and economic resilience.
