Asahi Kasei has strengthened its North American battery materials strategy with the opening of a new Hipore™ wet-process lithium-ion battery separator coating line in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company held a grand opening ceremony on August 20, marking an important step in developing a localized production and supply network for wet-process battery separators.
The new coating line has been added to Asahi Kasei’s existing Celgard® manufacturing facility in Charlotte. The investment will expand the company’s regional production capabilities and allow it to supply both dry-process and wet-process separator technologies from North America. Commercial production at the new line is expected to begin during the second half of fiscal 2026.
The project was initially approved in 2023 and represents the first phase of Asahi Kasei’s plan to establish a regional supply structure for wet-process separators. The opening ceremony also marked the 40th anniversary of the Charlotte facility, which has manufactured Celgard® dry-process separators in the United States since 1986.
Local government officials, Toyota Tsusho Corporation representatives, and other stakeholders involved in the project attended the ceremony. Toyota Tsusho has also entered into a capacity rights agreement associated with the new facility, reinforcing the commercial importance of the investment.
Asahi Kasei’s expansion comes as demand for batteries in North America is expected to increase beyond electric vehicles. The growing deployment of energy storage systems is creating additional demand for lithium-ion batteries and, consequently, battery separators. While the separator market remains highly competitive, stronger regional demand and increasing interest in localized supply chains could create opportunities for producers with manufacturing capacity close to customers.
Ryu Taniguchi, President of Asahi Kasei Battery Separator Corporation, said the Charlotte coating line represents a key milestone in establishing the company’s North American separator supply platform. The company plans to leverage Celgard’s established workforce and manufacturing infrastructure to offer customers both dry-process and wet-process technologies.
Asahi Kasei is also progressing with construction of a planned wet-process separator facility in Canada. Once operational, the Charlotte coating line and Canadian plant are expected to create a broader regional supply framework, reducing reliance on distant production and enabling faster responses to changing customer requirements.
The investments are aligned with Asahi Kasei’s broader growth strategy for its Energy & Infrastructure business, identified as a Growth Potential area under its medium-term management plan. The expansion is expected to strengthen the company’s competitive position in North America while supporting the region’s evolving battery and energy-storage ecosystem.
Product Impact and Chemical Commodity Price Impact
The new Charlotte coating line is expected to strengthen Asahi Kasei’s position in the North American lithium-ion battery separator market by increasing localized Hipore™ wet-process separator availability. Greater regional production should improve supply reliability, shorten logistics routes, and enable faster customer response as EV and energy-storage battery demand expands. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the immediate price impact is likely to be limited because separator coating represents only one part of the battery materials chain. However, stronger separator production could gradually increase demand for related polymers, solvents, coating materials, and specialty chemicals, providing modest upward price support if battery manufacturing growth outpaces regional supply.
