Türkiye and Azerbaijan signed a long-term deal to supply 33 bcm of Caspian gas, strengthening energy security and bilateral cooperation.
Türkiye and Azerbaijan have concluded a significant long-term natural gas supply agreement that will further strengthen energy cooperation between the two strategic partners. The deal, valued at a total volume of 33 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas, was officially announced by Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar. The agreement underscores the deepening economic and energy ties between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, while also reinforcing Türkiye’s long-term energy security strategy.
Under the terms of the contract, Azerbaijan will supply 2.25 bcm of natural gas annually to Türkiye over a 15-year period, amounting to a total of 33 bcm. The gas will be sourced from the Absheron gas field, a major offshore development located in the Caspian Sea. The Absheron field has become one of Azerbaijan’s key upstream assets and plays an increasingly important role in supporting the country’s export-oriented gas strategy.
Minister Bayraktar confirmed that the agreement is scheduled to take effect in 2029, with deliveries expected to continue well into the 2040s. Importantly, the gas will be transported to Türkiye using the already operational Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline. By relying on existing infrastructure, the two countries can avoid costly new pipeline investments while ensuring reliable and uninterrupted supply flows.
Bayraktar highlighted that long-term contracts such as this one are central to Türkiye’s broader approach to energy security. By diversifying supply sources and securing predictable volumes over extended periods, Türkiye aims to shield its domestic market from price volatility and geopolitical disruptions. The minister also noted that this strategy supports the government’s efforts to keep fuel and energy prices at competitive and stable levels for consumers and industry alike.
Official data from the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) further illustrates the growing importance of Azerbaijani gas in Türkiye’s energy mix. Between January and October of last year, Azerbaijan exported 9.8 bcm of natural gas to Türkiye, representing a 3.5% increase compared with the same period in 2024. This steady rise reflects both increasing production capacity in Azerbaijan and sustained demand in the Turkish market.
Over the full year 2024, Azerbaijan delivered 11.48 bcm of natural gas to Türkiye, according to EMRA figures. This marked an 11.9% increase compared with 2023, underlining a clear upward trend in bilateral gas trade. As a result, Azerbaijan currently ranks as Türkiye’s second-largest natural gas supplier, trailing only Russia.
The newly signed agreement not only reinforces Azerbaijan’s position as a reliable energy partner for Türkiye but also enhances the strategic relevance of the Southern Gas Corridor. As regional energy dynamics evolve and Europe and its neighbors seek diversified supply routes, long-term deals such as this one provide stability, predictability, and mutual economic benefit for both producer and consumer nations.
