Baker Hughes becomes Marathon Petroleum’s preferred downstream chemicals provider, supplying advanced technologies across U.S. refineries to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
Baker Hughes, a global energy technology company, has entered into a significant multiyear agreement with Marathon Petroleum Corporation, the largest petroleum refiner in the United States, to serve as its preferred supplier of downstream chemical solutions and related services across North America. The agreement was formally signed during Baker Hughes’ 26th Annual Meeting, held in Florence, Italy, marking an important milestone in the long-standing partnership between the two companies.
Under the terms of the preferred provider agreement, Baker Hughes will supply a comprehensive range of advanced downstream chemical technologies to Marathon Petroleum’s refining network. These solutions will be implemented across 12 oil refineries and two renewable fuel facilities located throughout the United States. The collaboration is designed to enhance operational reliability, support environmental compliance, and help reduce nonproductive time across Marathon’s refining operations.
The portfolio of technologies to be deployed includes Baker Hughes’ XERIC™ heavy oil demulsifiers, which are designed to improve crude oil separation efficiency and processing performance. In addition, TOPGUARD™ corrosion inhibitors will be used to help protect refinery assets from corrosion-related damage, extending equipment life and reducing maintenance costs. The agreement also covers BIOQUEST™ renewable additives, which support sustainability initiatives by improving fuel performance while aligning with evolving environmental standards. Complementing these chemical solutions, Baker Hughes will also provide digital monitoring tools that enable real-time performance tracking, predictive insights, and data-driven decision-making across refinery operations.
By integrating chemical expertise with digital technologies, Baker Hughes aims to deliver a more holistic approach to downstream optimization. This integrated strategy is expected to help Marathon Petroleum improve process efficiency, enhance asset integrity, and maintain consistent compliance with regulatory requirements, while navigating increasingly complex feedstocks and market conditions.
The partnership builds on more than three decades of collaboration between Baker Hughes and Marathon Petroleum. Over the years, both companies have worked closely to address technical challenges in refining and fuel production, leveraging innovation and operational know-how to deliver reliable energy supplies. This new agreement further strengthens that relationship by formalizing Baker Hughes’ role as a strategic supplier across Marathon’s North American refining footprint.
Commenting on the agreement, Amerino Gatti, Executive Vice President of Oilfield Services & Equipment at Baker Hughes, highlighted the growing demands placed on refiners in today’s energy landscape. He noted that supplying the energy required to power modern industry calls for operations that are flexible, efficient, dependable, and increasingly sustainable. According to Gatti, the downstream chemical solutions engineered by Baker Hughes are specifically designed to help refiners meet these challenges by improving performance while supporting environmental goals.
Gatti also emphasized Baker Hughes’ leadership position in downstream chemicals, pointing to the company’s extensive experience and technical expertise developed over decades of industry collaboration. The expanded partnership with Marathon Petroleum, he said, reflects the trust built between the two organizations and underscores Baker Hughes’ ongoing commitment to innovation, service quality, and customer success.
As refiners continue to balance operational efficiency with sustainability and regulatory pressures, agreements such as this highlight the growing importance of advanced chemical technologies and digital solutions in modern refining operations. Through this collaboration, Baker Hughes and Marathon Petroleum aim to set new benchmarks for reliability, performance, and environmental stewardship across the North American refining sector.
