Baker Hughes and PETRONAS partner to expand technology, sustainability, and supply chain capabilities for Asia-Pacific’s energy transition and growth.
Baker Hughes, a leading energy technology company, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysia’s national oil and gas company, Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), to explore strategic collaboration opportunities aimed at advancing energy expansion and transition initiatives across the Asia-Pacific region. This agreement is designed to foster joint business ventures focused on enhancing the local supply chain and implementing a variety of innovative technology solutions.
Under the MoU, both companies will evaluate initiatives across several domains, including an expanded footprint for LNG services, cross-border talent development programs to bolster field operations, and solutions for exploration, production, chemical applications, and mature asset management. Additionally, digital innovations such as artificial intelligence, as well as sustainable energy technologies like carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and biofuels and lubricants for turbomachinery, are key areas of focus.
As part of this initiative, Baker Hughes plans to expand its service capabilities in Malaysia by developing a full-scale aeroderivative gas turbine module repair facility. The center will include disassembly, assembly, grinding, and testing capabilities, supporting an installed base of over 600 gas turbines in the region. This expansion aims to reduce service turnaround times, increase reliability, and provide regional customers with faster and more efficient support.
Lorenzo Simonelli, Chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes, emphasized the importance of growing in tandem with regional customers such as PETRONAS. “Our collaboration reflects a shared commitment to delivering reliable, secure, and lower-carbon energy for Asia-Pacific. We’re excited to support this localization effort and work with PETRONAS and other partners to ensure the energy needs of today and tomorrow are met,” he stated.
Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, PETRONAS’ Senior Vice President of Projects, Technology & Health, Safety, Security & Environment (PT&HSSE), noted the partnership’s potential to drive project excellence, technological advancement, and supply chain resilience. “This strategic extension with Baker Hughes will help us accelerate innovation and support Asia’s cleaner energy ambitions,” he said. He also highlighted the new aeroderivative facility as a step forward in realizing the region’s energy transition goals.
Baker Hughes and PETRONAS have shared a long-standing partnership since 1975, marked by collaborations in LNG and natural gas development, as well as upstream projects. Presently, Baker Hughes operates multiple service centers in Malaysia, including an aeroderivative gas turbine repair facility in Port Klang, managed through Aero Alliance (a joint venture with GE Vernova), and a heavy-duty gas turbine service center operated with Sapura Energy. The company also runs two oilfield services supply bases and a Kuala Lumpur-based iCenter™, which offers monitoring and diagnostics for turbomachinery systems across Asia-Pacific.
To support its expansion plans, Baker Hughes is currently evaluating potential locations in Malaysia for the establishment of its new aeroderivative gas turbine service facility.
