BASF has initiated the registration process for its new fungicide, Adapzo® Active (Flufenoxadiazam), marking a significant step in crop protection innovation. Regulatory dossiers have been submitted in Brazil and Paraguay, with plans to file in Bolivia. This active ingredient is the first histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor introduced in the agricultural industry, reinforcing BASF’s longstanding commitment to soybean disease control.

Pending regulatory approvals, BASF anticipates launching Adapzo-based formulations in 2029. The development highlights the company’s strategic focus on delivering a novel mode of action to combat Asian Soybean Rust (ASR), one of the most destructive diseases affecting soybean crops in South America.

Soybeans are a vital global crop, used in food, feed and energy production. Farmers in Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia collectively account for 44% of global soybean output. However, ASR poses a serious threat to yields, with potential losses of up to 90% if unmanaged.

“Adapzo Active provides breakthrough control of ASR, helping protect growers’ yield potential while outperforming current market products,” said Ulf Groeger, vice president of fungicides research at BASF Agricultural Solutions. “Its unique mode of action offers effective control against mutated fungal strains, a growing challenge for farmers.”

The product also aligns with BASF’s sustainability goals. When used according to label guidelines, Adapzo Active works in harmony with beneficial and non-target species. It delivers enhanced results when paired with other BASF fungicides, such as Pavecto® Active.

“The Adapzo Active product family is designed to be a cornerstone in farmers’ disease management strategies, providing broad-spectrum control against South America’s most problematic soybean diseases, including target spot,” said Johannes Weimer, vice president of global strategic marketing portfolio solutions fungicides at BASF Agricultural Solutions.

Unlike many crop protection products developed for general use, Adapzo Active was specifically researched and engineered to address ASR in soybean production. Its development was informed by extensive collaboration with local growers and a deep understanding of regional farming practices.

“We listened to our customers and developed an active ingredient that directly addresses the challenges soybean farmers in Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia face,” said Ademar De Geroni Junior, vice president of strategic marketing for Latin America at BASF Agricultural Solutions. “With Adapzo Active, BASF strengthens its commitment to sustainable agriculture and long-term support for soybean growers in South America.”

This innovation underscores BASF’s leadership in agricultural research and its continued investment in crop protection tailored to specific regional needs.
