BASF has officially inaugurated a new production facility in Düsseldorf, Germany, dedicated to manufacturing specialty emollients used primarily in skincare and sun protection formulations. The project, backed by an investment worth several tens of millions of euros, represents a significant step in the company’s strategy to strengthen its specialty chemicals portfolio and address the increasing global demand for high-performance, sustainable cosmetic ingredients.
The inauguration ceremony brought together BASF executives, customers, representatives from local and regional government, the City of Düsseldorf, and industry associations, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the successful completion of the project. The new facility reinforces BASF’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and long-term growth within the personal care industry.
According to Agus Ciputra, Head of BASF’s Global Personal Care Business Unit, the investment extends beyond simply increasing manufacturing capacity. He noted that the new plant enhances BASF’s technical expertise and ability to support customers in developing differentiated personal care products. By increasing production of specialty emollients derived from renewable raw materials, the company aims to provide innovative ingredient solutions that align with evolving consumer preferences for sustainability, product performance, and formulation versatility.
Sven Crone, who oversees global production for BASF’s Care Chemicals division, emphasized the strategic importance of the investment for the Düsseldorf site. He described the expansion as a strong demonstration of BASF’s confidence in the site's future competitiveness. Crone also acknowledged the successful collaboration among project teams, regulatory authorities, and construction partners, which enabled the facility to be completed and commissioned within just two years despite various planning and execution challenges.
Specialty emollients play a vital role in cosmetic and skincare formulations by improving skin hydration, enhancing texture, and delivering a pleasant sensory experience. These ingredients are widely used in moisturizers, sunscreens, lotions, creams, and other premium personal care products. With the new production capacity, BASF intends to strengthen its ability to supply customers with reliable, high-quality ingredients while supporting the industry's transition toward more sustainable formulations.
The Düsseldorf site already serves as BASF’s largest global hub for the production and research of cosmetic ingredients and is the company’s third-largest manufacturing location in Europe. The addition of the new specialty emollients facility further enhances the site's strategic importance, reinforcing BASF’s leadership in the global personal care ingredients market. The investment also reflects the company’s broader commitment to expanding sustainable chemical production capabilities and supporting innovation across the cosmetics sector.
Impact on Product
The new production plant will significantly improve the availability of specialty emollients used in skincare, sun care, lotions, creams, and other personal care formulations. Increased manufacturing capacity based on renewable raw materials will enable BASF to supply customers with more sustainable, high-performance ingredients while supporting the development of innovative cosmetic products. The expansion is expected to enhance formulation flexibility, improve supply reliability, and reduce delivery lead times for manufacturers. As demand for environmentally friendly and premium personal care products continues to rise, BASF’s investment strengthens its ability to meet customer requirements and reinforces its competitive position in the global cosmetics ingredients market.
