This strategic move complements the chemical giant’s global network, ensuring faster and more flexible supply chains for the personal care and industrial sectors.

In a significant move to solidify its leadership in the sustainable chemicals market, BASF announced today, November 19, 2025, the official inauguration of its expanded production capacity for Alkyl Polyglucosides (APGs) at its Bangpakong site. The expansion represents a critical milestone in the company’s strategy to localize production and enhance supply chain resilience within the rapidly growing Asian geography.

The newly commissioned plant is designed to serve customers with greater agility and flexibility, addressing a bottleneck in the supply of high-performance, eco-friendly ingredients. As consumer preferences in Asia and globally shift aggressively toward "green" products, the demand for bio-based surfactants has outpaced traditional options. This facility positions BASF to respond immediately to these regional market dynamics without relying heavily on long-distance imports.

Mary Kurian, President of Care Chemicals at BASF, highlighted the strategic necessity of this investment during the inauguration. "This investment reinforces our commitment to being a reliable partner for customers across personal care, home care, and industrial sectors," said Kurian. "By expanding our APG production in Thailand, we’re enhancing regional supply capabilities, enabling faster, more flexible service, and supporting the growing demand for sustainable, high-performance solutions."

The Bangpakong expansion is not an isolated event but a piece of a larger, synchronized global puzzle. BASF has meticulously cultivated a robust production network to mitigate global supply chain risks. The company currently manufactures APGs at major hubs in Düsseldorf, Germany; Jinshan, China; and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Looking ahead, the company is continuing to invest in this specific chemistry. BASF confirmed that a new APG production line at the Cincinnati site is on schedule for a 2026 start-up. This upcoming North American expansion, combined with the new capacity in Thailand, ensures that BASF can offer a consistent, standardized supply of sustainable surfactants across all key industrial continents—Europe, Asia, and North America.

The focus on Alkyl Polyglucosides is driven by their unique profile in the chemical industry. APGs are widely regarded as the "gold standard" for sustainable formulation. They are mild secondary surfactants derived from 100% natural, renewable feedstocks, making them bio-based and readily biodegradable.

For formulators in the personal care and home care industries, APGs offer a rare combination of environmental safety and high performance. Their non-ionic nature allows them to be highly versatile, meaning they can be easily blended with other types of surfactants without losing efficacy.
