BASF has announced the successful commissioning of its Durasorb® LNG MAX technology at Cheniere Energy’s Corpus Christi LNG (CCL) facility in Texas, marking a significant commercial-scale deployment of the advanced gas pretreatment solution. The technology has been installed across multiple mid-scale and large-scale liquefaction trains at the facility, with Cheniere planning to extend the system to the remaining liquefaction trains by the end of 2027.
Installation activities began in 2025, with BASF supporting Cheniere throughout the preparation, implementation and startup phases. Under the collaboration, BASF supplied Durasorb technology along with specialized adsorbent materials designed to improve the treatment of natural gas before it enters the cryogenic liquefaction process.
The Durasorb LNG MAX process is designed to simplify pretreatment by combining the removal of several contaminants within a single adsorption solution. These include trace heavy hydrocarbons (HHCs), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX) compounds and water. Removing these components to cryogenic specifications helps prevent them from freezing during LNG production, reducing the risk of operational interruptions, equipment issues and unplanned downtime.
The technology can also increase flexibility in handling different feed gas compositions, which is particularly important for LNG operators seeking to optimize existing assets and accommodate changing feedstock conditions. BASF states that Durasorb LNG MAX can be applied to both greenfield LNG developments and retrofit projects, including the upgrading of existing dehydration systems.
BASF further supports customers through proprietary modelling tools, engineering assistance and ongoing technical services intended to help optimize system design and operation. The successful deployment at Corpus Christi represents an important step beyond earlier small-scale applications, providing a demonstration of the technology's performance in a large LNG production environment.
For Cheniere, the implementation forms part of its broader debottlenecking strategy, aimed at increasing the productivity and efficiency of its existing liquefaction platform without relying solely on entirely new infrastructure. According to Cheniere, Durasorb technology has contributed to advancing the company's organic growth strategy.
BASF views the project as a major commercial validation of its adsorption technology and its ability to address operational challenges within the LNG industry. As installation expands across additional Corpus Christi trains through 2027, the technology could become increasingly relevant for LNG facilities seeking improved pretreatment efficiency, operational reliability and feed gas flexibility.
Chemical Commodity Price Impact
The deployment should strengthen the commercial position of BASF’s Durasorb LNG MAX, demonstrating its suitability for large-scale LNG pretreatment and potentially increasing demand for specialty adsorbents in LNG projects and retrofits. For Cheniere, improved contaminant removal should support higher operational reliability, reduce freeze-related disruptions and provide greater feed-gas flexibility. The immediate impact on tracked chemical commodity prices is likely to be limited, as Durasorb primarily improves processing efficiency rather than materially changing commodity supply. However, stronger LNG production reliability could support natural gas and LNG demand, indirectly influencing petrochemical feedstocks. Increased adoption of adsorbents may also modestly support demand and pricing for specialized adsorbent materials over time.
