Bayer launches ABCs initiative to transform canola innovation through collaboration, transparency, and integrated systems supporting resilient, sustainable Canadian farming ecosystems.
Bayer Crop Science Canada has introduced a transformative initiative titled Advancing Better Canola (ABCs), designed to reshape how canola innovation is approached across the agricultural value chain. Rather than focusing on incremental advancements, the initiative seeks to create a more integrated, collaborative, and forward-looking system that supports Canadian farmers in addressing complex and evolving on-farm challenges. Rolling out throughout 2026 and beyond, the ABCs program emphasizes dialogue, partnership, and advocacy, while combining multiple disciplines such as genetics, agronomy, crop protection, and digital technologies into a unified framework.
The rationale behind the ABCs initiative lies in the growing realization that traditional innovation methods are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of modern agriculture. Canadian farmers are increasingly dealing with unpredictable weather conditions, rising input costs, and market uncertainties. To address these issues effectively, Bayer aims to move beyond isolated solutions and instead foster a connected ecosystem that enables practical, real-world outcomes. The initiative underscores the importance of building strong partnerships with growers and industry stakeholders to co-create solutions that are both scalable and sustainable.
Antoine Bernet, Country Division Head for Crop Science Canada, highlighted that Bayer’s decades of experience provide a strong foundation for reimagining canola’s future potential. Through ABCs, the company is committing to the development of resilient, profitable, and sustainable farming systems that will benefit not only current producers but also future generations. He emphasized that innovation should simplify farming practices rather than add complexity, aligning closely with the initiative’s overarching vision.
The ABCs framework is built around three core strategic commitments. First, leadership, which involves actively engaging with growers, understanding their needs, collaborating with industry participants, and advocating for emerging agricultural issues. Second, transparency, which focuses on openly sharing progress, insights, and even challenges, with the goal of rebuilding trust in agricultural innovation. Third, ecosystem empowerment, which aims to create seamless integration among various agricultural components so they function cohesively rather than in isolation.
To bring this vision to life, Bayer has already taken several concrete steps. One of the most significant investments is the establishment of a $45 million Canola Innovation Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This facility is dedicated to advancing foundational research in key areas such as root biology, climate resilience, and crop efficiency. Additionally, the company is strengthening its seed production capabilities through integrated investments in locations including Cranbrook, British Columbia; Lethbridge, Alberta; and Coaldale, Alberta. These efforts are intended to create a fully connected, end-to-end seed production system, offering greater control and consistency from breeding through to packaging.
Bayer is also aligning its operational model with the needs of modern agriculture. The introduction of the Dynamic Shared Ownership (DSO) model in 2024 reflects a shift toward faster innovation cycles and a stronger customer-centric approach. By prioritizing the needs of farmers, Bayer aims to deliver solutions that are both timely and relevant.
Shaun Corneillie, who leads canola, cereals, and biofuels for North America, emphasized that the ABCs initiative is fundamentally about listening to farmers and collaborating with partners to develop integrated, field-ready solutions. As agricultural challenges grow more complex, farmers require dependable ecosystems and practical innovations that can be implemented in everyday farming operations.
Overall, Advancing Better Canola represents a strategic effort by Bayer Crop Science Canada to redefine innovation through collaboration, transparency, and system-wide integration. By focusing on long-term sustainability and real-world impact, the initiative aims to strengthen the entire canola ecosystem and ensure it remains resilient in the face of future challenges.
